BEATLE FAN FOREVER! IN CASE OF EMERGENCY: CALL PAUL OR RINGO!

reply

I love Paul McCartney. He really is great. But I honestly can't say i like this movie. It's very weak. There are parts of it that are good enough to watch more than once, but overall it's a bit of a stinker.

reply

Well, as much as I admire McCartney as a musician, this movie was terrible. It's pretty much the musical equivalent of pornography. As you know, porn typically has a threadbare plot for the purpose of stringing together a few sexual acts. McCartney's film here has a threadbare plot for the purpose of stringing together a few musical acts.

The music is great. As a film, tho...this ain't cutting it.

reply

Some Good Music, but the film is terrible.
Paul's big mistake was in writing his own screenplay. He has admitted that he did not know what he was doing. One would think he would have learned his lesson with "Magical Mystery Tour". He should have hired a professional Screen Writer.
Paul is a great song writer, but a lousy screenwriter and film producer. He should have followed the example of Beatle George, and simply finance the film and let professionals make the film.

i was like 3 when this film came out, i was brought up on the beatles, ure right it is very week, but as a kid i loved it because it was one of the beatles in action, like before i realised films werent real life.
the reprise to eleanors dream was great.

WHOAH! You NAILED it!

I enjoy the movie a lot. I think of it as a bunch of music videos tied together, and the warehouse sequence is my favorite (the one where they play No Values, Not Such A Bad Boy, etc...). I love the song No More Lonely Nights, well the ballad version of it. I think they should have cut down or cut out the Eleanor Rigby sequence. However, very enjoyable film for me. Not the best ever made, but far from the worst.

Perhaps I've just been blinded by my love for all things Beatles, but I LOVE this movie. Sure, I can recognize the fact that it's campy and weakly plotted, but I think the film more than makes up for the areas in which it lacked, with it's fun, witty, colorful overtones. The ballroom dancing scene alone is worth getting this movie. I own it and my copy's nearly worn out! And of course, the video shoot for "Silly Love Songs" is the best part. It's silly, it's 80's, and it's sooo amusing. I first saw this movie when I was about twelve (I begged my Mom to buy me the video when I discovered Paul McCartney's face peering at me from the discount videos bin! He-hee..), and now I'm 23, and I love it just as much now (if you can't tell!).
My sisters and I still quote this movie to this day and sing those forgotten songs from the soundtrack (which I also owned!).
Good, clean fun. And I adore Paul for it.

SPSR: I love you guys!!!

I picked up this movie in the discount bins for pocket change. In that respect, it's a cool investment.
It has some good music and some good moments in the film. Not enough to carry this film into the realm of being a great film (like Concert for Bangladesh) but worth to have in the collection.

reply

I bought this at a thrift store for a pittance, and I was not disappointed. Paul was raked over the coals for re-recording the Beatles songs, and the remakes are disappointing but still worth a listen. The script doesn't have much going for it, but some of the sequences are very imaginative. I certainly like this better than "Across the Universe," which made me cringe.

reply

I actually liked Give My Regards to Broadstreet and Across the Universe. Still, different tastes I guess.

reply

Yes, probably different tastes, or maybe I just wasn't in the right mood to appreciate "Across the Universe." I watched it on a movie marathon and probably didn't give it the attention it deserved. I suspect I'd like it more if I saw it on the big screen.

Well, you can get it on DVD. That way your copy won't get so worn out. :-)

No it didn't - it did the opposite

Guessing this is irony here, in which case, Paul McCartney is the most amazing man on the planet, in addition to his songs he is a master artist, actor, screenwriter and consumate storyteller. There was no point making any more films after this one, it was THAT good. And what a singing voice, trust Macca never to pander to his audience or take them for granted.
