if instead it was called bugbusters, came out the same year, with good insect special fx, same cast, the same story and the same jokes and lines, except where ghost related dialogue occurs it is replaced with insect pertaining dialogue ? would it still have been a huge hit ?
shareFunnily enough the original Muppet Babies from the 80s and 90s ended up doing a parody of Ghostbusters called Bug Busters and even did a parody version of the song. I wish we could get that show on DVD/Bluray. Or at least on a streaming site.

sharethis is basically what i'm thinking, they would be otherworldly bugs, inter-dimensional or ancient bugs from inside the earth trying to retake the earth. bigger bugs. the lady bug being the stay puft is a good idea.
shareIf the bugs were of a similar size and appearance to the Arachnids in Starship Troopers I can see it being a similar kind of movie, with the giant bugs lurking in dark places, the mayor of NYC not believing it’s real and perhaps the scientist Bugbusters responsible for this mess in the first place.

i agree they would be bigger bugs, possibly from another planet or from ancient times coming from inside the earth, i can see and arachnid type replacing the library lady, just remaining quiet and still as the boys slowly move up to it and then snaps at them when ray says "get her!"

sharei think of a giant hive or something built on top of the building, basically a queen trying to bring bugs to the planet through a wormhole or something replacing gozer. stay puft i'm open on, the guy above mentioned a lady bug which would be something ray might think of as a friendly bug, but i guess there wouldn't be a form taken situation so maybe a cockroach ?

shareI think it would have worked because Ghostbusters has many elements which aren't reliant on the specific of ghosts. Aspects including the great cast and chemistry between them, the scientific nature of it, the great song and use of pop music, and the epic orchestral soundtrack by a respected composer, the look of the uniforms and equipment, the wonderful humour in it which works on many levels for kids and adults, and more. It had everything. I think the ghost aspect gave it a great colour and light show edge which may have been a little lessened if it was involving insects, but would be just as good in other ways.
