Why Possess Dana and Tully Though?

What exactly was the point of the demon dogs possessing Dana and Tully? I've seen the movie numerous times over the years, one of the best movies of the 80's as far as I'm concerned. But I'm not sure why this possession takes place, the demon dogs possess the both of them, they really don't need to take a human form since they do nothing, and then during the final scene they turn back into dogs.

It gives the two actors some fun things to do, but in terms of the story itself what was the purpose?

Dana and Louis became Zuul and Vinz Clortho, the Gatekeeper and Key Master, respectively, who needed to mate to bring forth Gozer the Gozerian. That was apparently a supernatural requirement of Gozer's return.

It looks to me like some kind of human interaction was a necessary factor. Zuul and Vinz Clortho, as terror dogs, were there by themselves before Louis and Dana were possessed. Their possession made possible the mating, which had the needed human element.

They turn back into dogs on the rooftop Gozer altar, then back into statues again, with the humans inside them.

It's necessary to accept the supernatural ruleset that included the requirement of the Gatekeeper-Key Master mating by humans.

Does that make enough sense?

I don't know or maybe in order for the door to be opened and for Gozer to enter, they may had required human forms in order to do so.
