Garbo's take

Does anyone know what Garbo herself thought of this movie? I'm wondering if she thought it was a giant invasion of her privacy or if she just found it amusing. But perhaps she didn't even see it or hear much about it. I think she lived in her own small circle away from all of the hoopla surrounding her legend in the 70's and 80's.

Garbo admired Anne Bancroft and she did see the movie. I don't recall what she thought of it.

So does anyone know if they tried to talk Garbo into taking the role?

reply

My guess is that it was probably briefly considered, but I'm certain that those involved had to know she would never have accepted.

reply

I suspect you're right, but it would have been so cool with Garbo in the role.

reply

As I recall Sidney Lumet was in contact with her several times trying to get her to, in effect, play herself in the film. But she wouldn't budge. I don't know if she ever saw it.

reply

I wouldn't expect Garbo to agree to be in this film, but at least Lumet tried.

reply

She surrounded herself with only close friends, but she wasn't shut off from the world so it would be ridiculous to think she wouldn't at least know about a movie thats whole storyline revolves around her.
