Dianne Wiest Kills

Many of the characters were portrayed wonderfully. Some were better than others, but everyone had a scene where they really shined. But I think Dianne Wiest really takes the cake. Her scenes with Lithgow are excellent: the one in the church, the one in bed, and the one outside the dance. She steals each scene, having a zinger of a line in each of them: "It's the one-on-one where you need a little work", "I never stopped (believing in you)", and "Look Shaw, we're almost dancing".

And then in the credits, she gives Lithgow that giant hug and we can see that she feels so blessed and relieved that the whole ordeal is over, this long battle between her daughter and her husband that she tried to stay out of, so that she could support her husband without combating her daughter.

Wiest is awesome in a lot of things she does, so quiet and seemingly meek but really very strong, and she gives a performance unmatched in many teen movies and in the remake.

I agree. Wiest always had a quiet dignity to her that really shines through in this role.

Yeah she plays a great mum, as she did in The Lost Boys. There’s something very ‘understanding’ and warm about her.

Be funny if it turns out she’s a nightmare Prima Donna on set - coke-snorting, abusive, narcissistic and a bully to low-paid crew members.
