Who else hated Ariel?

I just hated her character! I don't know why her and Ren got together at the end (even though it was so predictable). Her stupid little comments and actions just ticked me off for some reason lol

Yeah, the entire rural-rebel mentality played itself out fast. She seemed to be a pretty selfish person too.

reply

She was just trying so hard to be the big shot "bad girl" to break out of her perfect little PK (Preacher's Kid) image.

I put the fun in dysfunction!

reply

EXACTLY, hopefin2000! She actually played the selfish daughter of a self-involved, self-righteous preacher/oblivious father, and mousy, silent, dutiful wife/equally oblivious mother, very well! ..I've known a few like her~ Pretty much the proto-type of a PK.

In middle school and high school in the mid--late 70s some of the most "wild" kids I knew were PKs. DellaStreet 2/27/13, 7:46a.m.

I think she could have done that without jerking Ren around and acting like an idiot.

reply

Maybe all of that was to illustrate how much she grows and changes over the course of the movie.

Particularly when she jumps in front of an oncoming train just so Ren can save her life.

AND when she realizes that she's in love with Ren rather than Chuck. (remember how Chuck pummeled her for that?)

BTW, I know that Lori's brother is actor/martial artist Marc Singer. Have they ever acted together?

As I recall, Ariel had something better than breasts: legs and buttocks.

reply

She had 4 legs and no buttocks.

Unbelievably shallow. A divorce waiting to happen. Do us all a favor and chlorinate your gene pool.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

reply

that's because she is probably a she-male

when she realizes that she's in love with Ren rather than Chuck. (remember how Chuck pummeled her for that?)

That's not why Chuck hit her (and it definitely wasn't a "pummeling"). He hit her because a) she jerked him around and instead of doing the right thing and breaking up with him, she just blew him off, and b) she hit him first and then decided to bash the sht out of his truck after he hit her back (and after, don't forget, he had gotten in the car to leave, meaning he was ready to just let it go). I don't care what gender you are; you take a metal pipe to my car and damn straight I'll hit you to make you stop.

I'm not supporting violence against women - as a woman myself that would be counterproductive to say the least - but you make it sound like she told Chuck she was in love with Ren and he just started whaling on her, and that's not the case. He had every right to be upset at being tossed aside and if she hadn't hit him first, he wouldn't have hit her at all.

Saying "I apologize" is the same as saying "I'm sorry." Except at a funeral.

reply

yea she seemed pretty selfish to me as well. And I really got tired of the attemptive suicide BS like when she got up between the cars and nearly got hit by the semi...yea thats real smart thinking, not to mention the possible trauma she would have put her friends in if she died right there, (sadly she didn't)

I actually come down here just to check this kind of post. 40 minutes of watching Ariel trying so hard to be rebellious and being egoist makes me seriously wanna erase this character from the movie.
What she gots anyway? Her character is nothing but a self-centered girl. And how she throws a reproach on Kevin Bacon's character about him being so rude for not talking to her. Dang, the writer could've come out with a better line because as far as I know, Ren was always the first who said Hi to her.
And to top it all, she's just being egoist outside her house and acts, if I may say, genuinely sweet with her family and father to be more precise.
Despite the lack of appreciation to Ariel's attitude, I appreciate Lori Singer efforts on her character.
Some people would say, if you hate a character in a movie, it is possible that he/she nailed it by invading our subconscious and actually make you hate some unreal person.

I hated her too! She acted all BAD and HOT. It got on my nerves. Plus, she had a boyfriend when Ren moved into town but never bothered to break up with him. HE came to confront HER about sleeping with "the city boy". He said that she "couldn't wait to wrap those skinny legs around..." at which point she punched him in the mouth. He slapped her and turned toward his truck to leave. She grabbed a piece of pipe and started to smash the headlights and windows of his truck. He knocked the pipe out of her hand and punched her.

I am a woman but IMO, she deserved to get hit.

Dude should've gotten out of that truck and snatched the hair right out of her scalp.

reply

Sorry, but i'm in the minority who liked Ariel. Lori Singer played her well as the rebellous hellraiser preacher's kid. I think her reckless attitude was due to her brother's death plus her strict father's part in banning dancing and rock n roll music from the town. I don't agree with all her actions but I don't think she deserves to villified and I really got her character and loved her and ren together plus Kevin Bacon and Lori Singer had excellent chemistry so I rooted for them in the end.

reply

I agree, I thought Lori Singer played the role of Ariel very well and once we understood where Ariel was coming from and why she acted the way she did, it was easy to like her...

For anyone to hate the character, Areil - it means that Lori Singer did a great job acting. There are girls like this in real life. She had emotional problems and had to get over the death of her brother. When she went crazy on the car, I figured she was having a bad case of PMS.

No girl or woman deserves to be hit. If she is attacking a boy or man, they have the right to put up their hands to block punches. If she has a weapon, that's a different situation altogether.

Glad there are men who appreciate great legs and a cute butt.

reply

She did have a weapon- a piece of pipe. For a guy who lives in a farming town, the repairs to the damage she did to his truck is a HUGE expense. Plus, like I posted before, she never broke up with him before jumping into bed with Ren.

I hate it when women think they can hit a guy and not get hit back. If he had hit her first, that would be one thing. But she cheated on him, hit him first and went ballistic on his truck with that pipe. He grabbed her, hit her arm to make her drop the pipe, then hit her once more and left.

reply

I feel the exact same way. If he beat her first, then she had every right to get violent. But she punched him first, just for rightfully insulting her. Then he slaps her back and then she goes crazy on his car with a weapon and even tries to seriously attack him again. At that point I had no sympathy for her. Why should I root for this psycho? Just because she's a woman. I thought we're all equal. I'm not saying its okay to hit women, its not okay to hit anyone. But the way that scene played out, I was completely on the boyfriend's side.

And I have no idea what Ren saw in her.

WINGED FREAK...Terrorizes?....Wait till they get a load of me...

[deleted]

What if that girl or woman is killing your entire family, you don't have a right to hit them still?

reply

I really disliked her, she was annoying and selfish and just not a nice person! I have no idea why Rusty was actually friends with her they were literally opposites! My worst part with her was when she stood on the cars when the truck was coming! I actually liked her dad and felt a bit sorry for him! Yes, he was irrational but he actually had good intentions and he didn't mean for things to get out of hand ie. when those people started burning the books, he had already said he didn't have a problem with those books and told them to stop! Plus he came through in the end!

"This is my age! I'm in the prime of my youth, and I'll only be young once!"

"Unbelievably shallow. A divorce waiting to happen. Do us all a favor and chlorinate your gene pool."

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Exactly what I was thinking. Even without her serious attitude problem, she really lacked any outstanding Genetic features that would make her valuable for union to create a new generation.

Tut-Tut, I'll go get the curling iron.
