John Carpenter Could Have Been the Director

But, Universal wouldn't give him this film because "The Thing" cost too much and made too little.

A John Carpenter "Firestarter" would have been pretty sweet!

Instead this was the beginning of crappy Stephen King adaptations (together with Children of the corn). Mark L. Lester wasn't Spielberg when it comes to working with children and poor young Drew Barrymore couldn't carry the film all by herself.

Carpenter did Christine and Starman during that time, so I think it turned ok for him.

Yeah, which makes it seem even odder that Universal took him off of this one.

So instead of a synthesizer Tangerine Dream soundtrack we would have gotten a John Carpenter synthesizer soundtrack.

Split the difference? :-)
