Final Fight Scene is a Classic

Hi sportsfans,
Despite criticisms of 'Fear City', the final fight scene between Matt Rossi (Tom Berenger) and the serial killer (John Foster) is unique and one-of-a-kind.
The fight scene pits classic western boxing versus kung-fu. Matt Rossi is a skilled, experienced boxer. In a street fight, however, by adding illegal blows using the elbow, knees, rabbit punching, kidney punching, and head-butting, a boxer can be most lethal opponent. Even without the illegal blows, a skilled boxer is a tough opponent.
It looks like John Foster's kung-fu is going to win out over Tom Berenger. But the killer makes an error. Just as he has Rossi 'on the ropes', he gives the boxer a few moments to recover. Rossi takes the offensive and mad-dog attacks the killer, using close-in hammering blows and his superior brute strength over the killer. The result is the killer is beaten to death in short order. Good triumphs over evil.
I'm reminded of, "Revenge of the Ninja", where actor Eric Braeden portrays an American businessman who is supposedly the friend of Sho Kosugi. It turns out the 'clumsy' American is secretly the dangerous, skilled ninja going around killing a lot of people. In that final fight scene it was ninja versus ninja with Braeden using every dirty and deceptive ninja trick in the book. But good ninja Sho wins in the end anyway, slicing Braeden down on the head with the sword.

I am not a big fan of martial arts movies, because these fight are all ballocks. I prefer UFC and Pride. Even though this particular fight is definitely not a realistic one, it does look like a realistic and it is very enjoyable to watch. This is why I own the DVD.

Why it is not a realistic one? Because nobody is going to kick above the belt on the street. I think the serial killer would be throwing low kicks. Oh, and by the way, it doesn't look like kung-fu. More like karate.

Not to mention; rare and unusual.

A rather dull fight scene, all in all. And when it comes to "illegal blows", then karate or muay thai fighters actually practice spinning backfists and elbow strikes, neither of which the boxers learn, so it´d obviously also be a disadvantage for the boxer. In addition to not having experience with defending against kicks.

Ditto. The boxing match from the flashback had more menace.

That fight scene delivered a satisfying heap of raw brutality. Berenger really beats that guy to a bloody pulp!
