Two different endings...(SPOILERS )

I'v seen this film twice on television and it had a sad ending: when they meet again at the bookstore, they talk and say goodbye, they walk out, each in a different direction....end titles.

The version I have on dvd now has a happy end: they walk in a different direction and after a short while Robert changes his mind and runs after her.

Strange but funny...

Really? It has two endings? I've never heard that... I've only seen the dvd, which I now own, and it has the won where it ends with the two of them on the train.
And did you mean Frank? I don't think there was a Robert in the film...

I just realized you can see completely through my dress! ~ Meryl Streep

So you own the one with the happy ending! Good for you! :-)

'Frank' is played by Robert De Niro so I did mean the caracter Frank, sorry!

reply

They must have cut the ending out at the end of the movie when you watched it on TV or you missed it; because the first time I ever saw this film it was on TV and it has the 'happy ending'-where they both meet up again on the subway train. And I also own the DVD now and its the same ending as when I watched it on TV.

reply

I second this, they must have cut the final minutes for time constraints.

On the other hand, the 'normal' ending in the train still allowed for the possibility that they would just go their own way after that, in my opinion. So it could still be sad, if you wanted it to be sad.

reply

I don't want to make it sad...I'm fine with the current ending...some possibility for happy ending in the train. Life is hard and complicated enough..no need sad ending in this beautiful movie.

ordinarily, i don't go for "happy endings." particularly, contrived "hollywood happy endings." but then, ordinarily, i don't go for romantic dramas, either...
so, you reading this can take it from me that this film is worth seeing and enjoying for its simple charm and, yes, happy ending. in fact, i never wanted to see two people come together at the end of a film so much as i wanted to see these two come together. it also helps that frank and molly are played by two of cinema's best actors (one of whom - de niro - is a longtime favourite of mine).
and, the best thing about the final scene (on the train - had never even heard of an alternate ending before i read about it here) is how understated de niro and streep play it: like they are just something that actually was meant to be. no jumping around, no big sloppy kisses, no uncontrollable emotions...not sure if the director's responsible for that, or just two knowing actors at their best, but it works.

Anyway, it's a hollywood happy ending, no matter where the camera is moving in the final kiss. Restrainer? Maybe, But too happy for what the story is. Is like putting Streep and Eastwood together in BRIDGED OF MADISON. Silly.

But Eastwood's shot a masterpiece 10 years later.

I have seen this movie on TV, VHS and DVD - they all ended with them getting together. They had both left their partners so it was all set up for the 'morally' to get together at the end.

i think i know what you're talking about. i saw a version where they end up getting married.
