Brief Encounter

Mainly the same plot and story, very lovely movie.

Yeah, it was the same plot but I found Falling in Love to be far better than Brief Encounter. Just my opinion, I know BE is popular among a lot of people, but it fell flat for me. FIL was very touching. They had great chemistry.

"You jump, I jump."

Has anyone seen the version of Brief Encounter with Richard Burton and Sophia Loren? I'm watching it right now...it's alright.

reply

Burton and Loren have very good chemistry together. but De Niro and Streep are two of my favorite actors and their chemistry is unbelievable.

goodness, i cannot believe that people are using brief encounter and this load of drivel in the same sentence. it is such a silly unexceptional film. what it shows also is the inability of these two actors to play small parts. they are both wonderful as villains or mixed up maidens but two suburban spouses, no, they cant manage it. the script is nondescript it is true, there really is very little story but then brief encounter has a small story too. what works so well in Brief encounter is the performances, it is difficult to imagine such repressed and essential emotion between two people, struggling to do the right thing, and really trevor howard and celia johnson do it. you feel their dilema and their real agony as they navigate their way through their own moral mase. there was none of this in this film. such a silly waste of time. to me it seemed that both de neiro and streep had decided to give brief encounter a go. this could never really have been a good film. it was too formulaic, but it is a surprise that it is such a bad film with the cast it has and you can only ask why did they do it? they wanted to attempt brief encounter, did the experience humble them. did they realise their limitations, i hope so. it does make me want to return to brief encounter and remember just how superb that film really is and how difficult it is to play such small roles.

Kluismans:

You are as dead wrong in your assessment of this film as it comes.

DiNiro and Streep aren't "up to acting as two middle-class, regular people"? Are you completely insane.

This us a poignant little, very realistic story if actually FOUR sympathetic characters. I think it's a sad yet pretty realistic love story of two people who, upon meeting someone they find intriguing, are CLEARLY at first conflicted about their feelings, yet, due to a little fate if seeing the person a few MORE times, by happenstance, they come to become interested in each other.

I feel sorry for the keads, I don't think they're BAD people, and I certainly also feel sorry for the spouses they each betrayed.

When the film first came out in 1983, several critics said that this a great little "quiet" film that UNFORTUNATELY would probably not be that well-received by Amerucans, but would be quite popular in Europe. And, they were right. This film ended up selling quite well with the more sophisticated audiences of Europe, who don't need pat, dumb, stereotypical little love stories starring Jennifer Aniston to be entertained, but rather, appreciate finer, more realistic writing and understated yet very real performances by all involved.
