Did anyone else have the same reaction?

I'm watching this movie for the first time right now and I'm just completely and utterly in love with Meryl Streep! She's just so real and human in every moment on screen.
She's gotta' have some incredible internal mechanisms as an actress to make everything seem so utterly convincing and real. It makes me think of what Diane Keaton once said that "she's the genius of my generation".
And Bob De Niro....O'boy! Not only does he look great, but he's right up there at the same level. -Absolutely brilliant to put these two actors togheter. No wonder De Niro has said that Meryl is his favourite actress to work with....does it get any better than this!

Uhhh... saw the movie tonight, and of course my tears came... Meryl Streep is the most beautiful actress in this world. My soul has been deeply in love with hers for 30 years - all since the Dear Hunter... It is the sadest thing in the world that we will never meet.

Hey....you may get lucky ; )

Bob and Meryl have an incomparable chemistry! They were born to star in a movie together :-)
Anyway,FALLING IN LOVE is one of my favourite movies.Cruelly underrated,in my opinion.

reply

I agree! I was most surprised at its low rating. I loved the chemistry between Meryl and Robert. She is such a pretty woman and fantastic actress. I thought they were in another movie together?

reply

I totally agree. Falling Love has been one of my favorite movies since it came out in 1984. Have seen it several times. Both DeNiro and Streep are star actors and were both so delicious in this movie.

reply

Yes, they both are the most outstanding acting talent of their generation. They would have to be in order to sell this love story. remember, most find adultery highly disagreeable and for us to root for them to find each other at this movie meant they really sold us on their characters. Great movie and well done for all involved!

Gosh, thank goodness for this thread. I absolutely loved this film the first time I saw it (when it came out) as well. There are some morons on this board who are criticizing Meryl for "stammering", for saying that no one would find DeNiro appealing enough to leave their husband for him, etc. I can't believe how many stupid people there are in this world...I have no tolerance for moronic assessments.

This thread is a breath of fresh air! Thank you!

Strange, as disagreeable as I find infidelity, I couldn't help but wonder why Meryl Streep's character had married (married?, I can't remember if they were in the film, it's been a while since I saw it) such a dullard. I thought Robert DeNiro's character was definitely a breath of fresh air for her. In any event, it's sad that people were hurt and credit must go to the performers for playing it so sensitively.

I found that Meryl's character was very soft and feminine married to a man who has moved on from grief faster than she. And, DeNiro was a nice guy who was with a more sporty, smart and hard-edged wife. It does make you wonder, though, if there is a reason for that. Too bad there wasn't a part two showing how these two soft characters fare as a couple.

Meryl's character had a lot on her plate. 1. she lost a baby. 2. Her father was pretty seriously ill even though he didn't want to admit it.. 3. Her marriage had it's difficulties... she was in a mental state that would have made it easy for her to fall into an affair with someone.. Frank seemed more like he was just looking at his life and thinking "Is this all there is?" and was pondering the move to Texas whether it would be right for him or something.. Meryls character seemed more vulnerable to me..

Its a Chick Flick...need more be said?

Yes I had the exact same reaction as OP wen I saw it last night.

Great to kno bout Diane Keaton's comment bout her, she's right.

I've always thought this is her most underrated performances. I'd love to see her team up again with De Niro.

Favourite Meryl moments in this film are when Molly breaks down at the funeral and when she tells Isabelle that she's met Frank.

Watching this after several years. It feels like the first time. I am pretty shocked at its ratings. It's a very human, realistic script. About people and just falling in love. Both did a great job. They have serious chemistry which makes the film very moving. Many parts will bring tears to your eyes.

Also wanted to know, if anyone knows from their generation who could have worked on the sets or know them; if they were actually in love during filming. If they were together. Them being brilliant actors aside.

I'm not completely sure why this movie evokes such emotion and relevance for me. Maybe because I was in a similar situation some 16ish yrs ago. I was married, she wasn't. It didn't work out between us. She eventually married, I divorced and we didn't see each other for 14 yrs. strange as it is we saw each other coming and going at Barnes and Noble. I sent her note telling her how I had always wanted to tell her something from our "break up". We met and she is "happily" married (for the last 15yrs) with 2 children, but, (and in life there is always a BUT) she has carried a "secret" torch for me (and I for her). While her marriage has afforded and provided for her many benefits, she has missed the passion we shared. I was able to (finally) apologize for hurting her so emotionally. We emailed a few times after that but realized further communication would be a betrayal not only to her husband but also her children. Sorry to spill my guts. So, the last seen of the movie with "Frank" and "Molly" embracing on the train will forever remind me of my last embrace with "K" at the Botanical Gardens. For all of the movies these two fine actors have done, I believe these could be Bob DeNiro and Meryl Streep's finest performances
