Why don't they make movies like this anymore??

Every "hip" and "edgy" movie nowadays that the critics love has to be about gay people or transvestites or communists.

What happened to old fashioned dramas like this?

As, I believe it was, Jack Klugman, who has been around and been in the acting business for a while, once said in an interview on TCM: "Movies today have no sentiments in them; the people who make them are afraid to include feelings in the films they make. I used to go to movies in the past and sometimes cry like a baby." The producers and directors of modern films are frightened of creating such movies, and this is based upon what my interpretation of Mr. Klugman's statement, because they are sure that today's audiences cannot stand for such emotions in their films, and, therefore, will not pay to see ones that are marked by sentimental story-lines.

I, myself, do not agree with those "smart" movie-makers.

Most films these days are aimed at 14 year old boys, they are the ones who spend the money. A pity but true.

Yes..I realize that im responding to a post from 9 years ago but....

Is the complaint about gay's, transvestites and communists being represented in movies or is it about dramas like this not being made anymore?

Lets assume that your bigotry was just to make a point about simple dramas like this not being made anymore.

There are lots of reasons for that all economic:

1) Movies like this have already been made. You can watch them all over cable.

2) Movies don't last as long in theaters as the used to because of DVD's, and cable channels, and iphone downloads and such. So to make money with a movie like this it would have to stay in theaters much longer.

3) Theaters that show movies like this no longer exists in large numbers. Megaplexes make money with blockbusters, children, and popcorn.

3a)You can also get good access to foreign films which ire more like this movie.

4) People's viewing styles have changed...movies reflect what people want to watch

5) IMDB has this movie on their moviemeter ranked 48 for 1984. It wasn't that good.

6) People can handle much more complex plots. TV shows in the 70's/80's used to have an opening scene, 21 minutes of one plot, back to original scene...Now TV and movies bring the viewer through multiple levels of plot.

So it really comes down to if you like movies like this there ware plenty of ways to watch this movie at home and movies like it....And this is how the media companies make money on it. They wont make money on a movie like this in the theater.

Well unless you think that movies like Unfaithful and The Break Up and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind aren't the children of this movie.

They do. DeNiro was recently in a movie like this: The Intern which like Falling in Love is a movie about nothing.
