Charming, funny, and romantic

I really identified with this movie. Virginia Madsen in 1984 was perfect as Madeline. In 1984, I worked in San Francisco (where the movie takes place) and was similarly enamored with a pretty young blonde lady who played in the college orchestra.

The songs really make this movie and set the mood for scene after scene. The theme song "Together in Electric Dreams" and "Video" have a very upbeat 1980s style. My favorite though is that soulful song "The Dream" by Culture Club and the brief animated dream sequence that goes along with it in the movie - very beautiful sentiment! The rich use of J.S. Bach is excellent.

The charming illogic of the film reflect the charming illogic of love. Nothing is over-explained, nothing is rationalized, things just happen and carry us along.

I've always thought that the story was a modern take on the Cyrano De Bergerac story hence it will always score high as a rom-com. Much like Steve Martin's Roxanne although the links to Cyrano are much stronger there (his enormous conk!).

Hmm, I never made that connection. Though Edgar was not quite as virile as Cyrano, he was certainly as eloquent in his own way. You make an excellent observation!
