I loved the idea that the battleship is always accompanied by a big dark cloud overhead, even when the rest of the sky is blue!

I'd say that didn't have any special meaning. It was simply a warship, running on coal. This was 1914.

A year when every cruise ship out of Naples had stokers who stopped work to join in opera choruses and a rhinoceros in the hold. All perfectly normal for the time and place.
