just watched it again, the soundtrack ugh!

I had not seen Dreamscape in about 20 years. The effects may seem primitive these days (and that is to be expected) but the story still holds up well. My only gripe is that damn soundtrack. It is horrible and a total mood killer at times. Other times, it's simply laughable a la Beverly Hills Cop.

Just goes to show: the score composer is not always right. (According to trivia, Jarre insisted on the electronic score.)

For the record, I agree. This ranks among the cheesiest of movie scores.

Yep, truly awful. Watching it right now. Back in the 80s when I saw it the first time, I didn't think anything about it. But this kind of scoring is really dated. I read that there had been a plan for Star Wars to have that kind of score. How bad would that have been?

I think that is what makes some of these 80's movies so charming. The costuming, effects, and more than anything, the music scores.
Sometimes it's painful to watch, or hear, but i love it. Nothing like 80's cheez.

Agreed.

I just saw it for the first time, and within minutes I was making a comment on how bad the soundtrack was. My girlfriend agreed. Other than not being very good in general, it was overly loud, which made you notice how bad it really was. Then there were those smooth jazz moments....

Crimes Of Passion has a similarly dated and electronic soundtrack, but it's actually good and fits the movie.

I just came here to talk about the soft-porn soundtrack for this great film. Watching the special features, the director wanted a grand orchestral score and that is why he went after Maurice Jarre, only for Jarre to decide that this was the time to experiment with synthesizers. The director even states at one point that Jarre knew he was unhappy. I wish the director would have stood up to him, respectfully of course, because the composer is there to bring the director's vision to life.

The synth score was bad back then, and has severely dated the film now.

I am not a fan. I just happen to enjoy movies. Fans are embarrassing.
