Was Bob Blair right?!?

this is just to be devil's advocate, because obviously he was pure evil. Still, if you think about it... what if the US had disarmed in 1984, as the president in this film apparently wanted to do? Mikhail Gorbachev wasn't in power yet, at that time. When this movie was being filmed, the Soviet leader was either Yuri Andropov or possibly Konstantin Chernenko (both were in power in 1984). Neither of those guys was anywhere near Gorbachev, in terms of being open to any notion of compromise.

Seriously, if the US had disarmed at that time, would we still be here 26 years later to argue about whether it was right or wrong? I think there's room for debate on that topic.

This could make an interesting fanfiction world, in an alternate universe 1985 in which a nuclear war was about to start, like in Watchmen. But in this world, people like Dennis Quaid's character would try to stop nuclear war by entering into the dreams of various presidents, premiers, generals, etc.... that would be pretty interesting to me.

You are toast, my toasty friend.

Total disamament would have been a foolish idea, considering that "assured mutual destruction" was what helped ensure a stalemate. That said, I don't think the President in Dreamscape was about to give away the store- but his willingness to bargain was unacceptable to Blair.

Interesting question. I found myself evaluating Blair, was he actually evil? In a way, I think Blair is a man who has the hardest job in the world, ensuring the future of his country at ANY means. In the real world, you can't have peace without assassinations and murders hidden in the background that help to keep said peace. Blair was not a man who enjoyed killing or seeing someone die, but he was a man who was cold in the sense that no one, not even a friend, would stand in the way of what must be done to protect the country. That makes him bad for the sake of the story being told, but really he is just being coldly logical about protecting the country that he believes in.

I am not a fan. I just happen to enjoy movies. Fans are embarrassing.
