What's with the Psycho (1960) references?

The fact that Anthony Perkins was cast is not a reference in itself...

But then you have him peeping through a peep hole. And being a murderous psycho in drag at the end.

Is it not too much to NOT be a direct Psycho reference?

I find it preposterous to "associate" such a bad movie with the Hitchcock masterpiece.

I'm wondering if all this is just "by chance", or Russel saw an opportunity with Perkins involvement and went all-in for it. What do you think?
