I can't believe how underrated and virtually forgotten this film is. Country was by far my favourite of the three farm movies released in 1984, the other two being Places in the Heart and The River. Jessica Lange's performance is startlingly vivid, Sam Shepard and Wilford Brimley both do great supporting work, and it explores its social themes with admirable grit and intelligence. It's an incisive, penetrating film that delivers with full credibility.

That's great that you remember the other two. Places in the Heart is my favorite of the three but this is my next favorite. Jessica Lange's performance is really what makes this film and I love the Windham Hill artist's contributions to the wonderful soundtrack.

What about the performance of Levi Knebel as Carlisle? One of the great understated performances by a teen in films. The final scene in the kitchen where he can't look his father in the eye, in addition to many other fine scenes. All around great acting here, and I love the way it ends, with no real resolution. Their struggles will continue...Near perfect in every way.

I agree that this is an excellent film. It captures what life is like for the average farm family. With the economic woes brought on with the recent sub prime loan debacle and all the home foreclosures, this movie is just as relevant today as it was in 1984.

The scene toward the end of the movie with Ivy (J. Lang) and the FHA agent that replaced Tom McMullen is unforgettable. "The little guy" confronts the "the government bureaucrat". Also, the scene in the barn with Ivy and her neighbor Arlon is powerful. It captures the despair of working people and their families facing foreclosure and the loss of their way of life.

It is indeed extremely relevant, especially with the recent foreclosures – which affected farms as well as homes. I saw this in the theater in 1984, and I watched it again tonight. Unlike most '80s films, this one looks and feels very contemporary because these are people who don't change for the sake of fashion Powerful film with a very strong cast. 8/10 stars.

I've never gotten tired of watching this film.

Way too cruel that rating system done. For movie that explained all of good things that one good movie should be. Not as much of 80s movie can do like this. Simple and honest.

10 is less worth for a realistic reflection of life like this great.

I both Women; Jessica Lange, and her "Jewel Ivy"
It's my favourite of the two films of her's that I like the most, the other is "Music Box" (1989)
I heard her say in interview, that "Tootsie" was to her, the best performance.
I've watched it, and still think "Country" is her best.

I meant; I love both Women
