How many people remember the maddening xylophone tune that ended in 'hello folks!'. I saw this film 23 years ago when it was released and have never seen it since but that tune stuck in my head forever.
OMG you too??!!!!! I saw this film on TV in the 80's. I was probably about 15 at the time and that tune stuck with me ever since. I agree with mrs-tweedy, bloody good film. Bill Paterson is wonderful. Cheerio folks!! BTW aren't those rabbits scary looking??!!!
Bill Forsyth movies ALWAYS seem to include a "running gag" - that's quite often not explained; just a random event that makes no sense to the audience, but which seems to make perfect sense to the characters in the movie. In "Gregory's Girl" there's a kid who's dressed up as a penguin, and who wanders around the school perpetually being told that he's in the wrong place. In "Local Hero", almost EVERY time Mack (the American) steps off the pavement, in the tiny traffic-free Scottish village, he almost gets run over by a manic moped driver. Happens several times. And in "Comfort and Joy", there's that damned tune. Seems to me that a Bill Forsyth movie wouldn't be HIS without one of these "running jokes."
I too saw the movie when it was first released... and still remember the tune! But then, I also remember the kid inexplicably waddling around wearing the penguin costume. It's a "Forsyth thing". Bit like white doves in a John Wu movie, or a mouse in a Cuneo painting. A "signature".
C&J is currently available on BBC's iPlayer,so I enjoyed watching it again today.. Seeing Charlotte (Clare Grogan) speaking Italian brought me right back to the "Bella,Bella" bit from "Gregory's Girl"..another coincidence, or gag?
If Book was in Intelligence B4 finding God,does that mean He's a Shepherd Spy? (Thank You,Spike..)
The "hello folks!" sort of sounded like a duck quack, didn't it? I saw this movie once nearly thirty years ago and I still remember that tune. Maddening.
LOL!!! Yes, it's been decades but sometimes I'll find myself thinking of that tinkly little tune ending with, "Hello, Folks!" I cannot believe it's been 30 years since the first time I saw COMFORT AND JOY. I really liked it. Wish it was on DVD in the USA. I haven't seen it in eight years, when I still had my VCR and cassette copy of the film.
