Was he just "well off"? (in today's money worth a few million dollars), very rich ? (tens of millions) or extremely wealthy? (100 million dollars). Anyone have an opinion?

I am sure he is worth several million in today's terms. He is not worth hundreds of millions though. His company is small with only one employee. His influence is well known in London in the exchange but not much else. His house is really nice, but since he is such a miser, he might be able to afford more.

Probably very rich (tens of millions), but conducted business and life as though he were almost a pauper. There are a lot of people out there like this.

shareAgreed. He seems like the equivalent of someone today who has a startup with 10+ million annual recurring revenue, built off the capital of a smaller business sold prior.
Small enough to not be a household global name, but large enough to be well known in the local community.
Probably around 2-4 million. Which was a lot in those times. It would be about 160 million in today's times.
