A question about Marley

What was that cloth he used to tie his jaw shut? Was that something used on dead people back then?

It is because in Dickensian times they would tie a bandage around the head/mouth of a fresh corpse to keep the mouth shut (stop it coming open) later in history they started stitching the mouth shut after death (the sticking hidden inside mouth and nose).

Dickensian times, huh? I'm going to start using that.

I don't know if modern embalming prevents this these days, but when corpses decay, the tongue swells forcing the jaw wide open. The tied cloth was there to minimize the occurrence. But today, jaws are wired shut internally by the embalmer.

Wow, I never even thought of why he had that on his head. I think I'll go for cremation.

It's called a 'wrapper'. It comes from the same era as pennies being put over the eyes to prevent them opening.
