I don't get it, why do you haters hate this film?

I can see valid points as to why people may not like Smokey and The Bandit II... but I don't get why so many don't like this film? A good cast of actors having fun... no one was expected to give an award winning performance... so if you can answer with something more then a one word reason, then tell me, what is it about the film you do not like?

It's been decades since I saw this movie in the theater. I'm not that picky, but it really was a bad movie. It was more corny and stupid than it was funny.

And that ending was hilariously bad. They didn't even show the finish to the race. LOL. It's like the movie was so bad, they just fast-forwarded to the end to put the audience out of its misery.

I thought the ending was OK. You don't see who wins because the Sheik says to his father he didn't win, but the race back he is garunteed to win because he has hired the winning driver to race for him. Then introduces him to the driver by opening the door and the Ape leans out and kisses the father sheik.

"Now if your mother could kiss like that!"

What was so bad about that ending?

Because most movies "show" the ending, i.e. we actually get see the climatic scene.

It was tremendously anti-climatic to just have one of the characters tell us what the ending was.

But it does show the ending--the climax is "rescuing" the sheik from the cathouse. Although The Cannonball Run II focuses on racing more than The Cannonball Run does, both films are really about these characters in a series of comic situations--it's a comedic character study more than a comedic action-comedy or race film. Who actually wins the race isn't so important, because that's not the focus. The same was true in the first film, which changed the parameters of the race after they got stuck at the construction site then turned it into an absurdist "foot race" at the end.

I saw this at someone's grade 7 birthday party and thought it was comedy genius - it was my first encounter with a lot of people that would later become part of my mental landscape. So I have a soft spot for it - it has a sort of sun-setting-on-the-empire sort of feel to me now when I watch it.
