fabulous film

I love this film. The first time I saw it I was completely taken by the music and landscape. The acting is superb (well deserved Cannes best actress award for Helen) and altho a sad, bleak story, definitely worth a viewing. Everyone in Hollywood should be sat down, forced to watch this and told "Now THAT is acting!"

I agree completely, and what a fantastic soundtrack too.

Selections from the soundtrack appear on the Mark Knopfler soundtrack compilation CD, Screenplaying (which also includes his music from The Princess Bride, Local Hero, and Last Exit to Brooklyn). By the way, if you haven't seen it, Local Hero is another must-see film from that time period.

I have all of Knopflers soundtracks scrith and Cal has to be my favourite. Have you seen Comfort and Joy (another Bill Forsyth, pre Local Hero) I've searched for that soundtrack everywhere and canna find it.

reply

The music played in Comfort and Joy is all taken from the Dire Straits album, "Love Over Gold". Strictly speaking, it's not a soundtrack as the album was a massive hit, as were some of the singles on it.

Brilliant music, I have to agree.

I thought I heard the Knopfler!

He also did the track to Local Hero if my memory serves correct.

Cal is a simple story, handled realistically and directly, making it all the more heartbreaking and honest, thus it is one of the films I always hold in high esteem. Dug this up for another viewing. Still holds.

One of Helen’s best roles.

Actually, there are a few tunes from the "Comfort and Joy" soundtrack that were released back in 1984 (when the film was in theaters) on vinyl. To my knowledge they've never been re-released. However, I was able to locate them after scouring the Web. The individual tracks are entitled "Comfort (Theme from Comfort and Joy)," "Joy," and "A Fistful of Ice Cream." Definitely worth tracking-down if you're a fan of the film (which is my favorite holiday flicker; comeback Bill Forsythe!) or Mark Knopfler's work. And yes, they do sound very similar to the tunes on the excellent "Love Over Gold."

funny ive never heard of mirren until recent years, still already here in the plot i read she's described as an older woman, and its almost scary how much she looks the same, i liked the dialogue like when there are police car sirens "they're playing our tune". from what i saw mirren didnt seem to show up until almost an hour in but seemed thats the name theyre selling the movie with on, this cal is obviously the main role.

know i should put it down,
fall into game all the time,
make me run the mile,
treat me any way you like,
sucker for you all around.

I had to watch it several times to pick up Cal's witty retorts like when he's on his way to "lift spuds" in the open truck the sirens go by fast. Cal says "They'll sell no ice cream going at that speed." Also when he asks Crilly, who went in to rob the movie theater, how was it. Crilly asks "What?" Cal says "the f'ing picture."

I love that music they play when he's having a tea break at the farm and Marcella walks into the room doing chores and looking for Lucy. Cal's face lights up when he sees her but then realizes and tries to look normal. It's such sad music those Uilleann pipes.
