Why does that one dude swallow the payphone quarter?

I still dont get that odd weird scene where Daniel Stern's character tries to use the payphone and all of a sudden some rival of his just grabs the quarter and swallows it and both of them just stare at each other

reply

I don't think that was his rival. It was one of the goons who worked for the mayor(or the people who were dumping the toxic waste), who was sent to follow Daniel Stern's character after he left the meeting. I guess Daniel Stern was about to call somebody and report everything that went on in the meeting, and that goon swallowed the quarter to prevent him from doing so. Anyways, that probably is one of the most strangest scenes in ANY horror movie. But it's a classic!!

reply

right, the guy with the sunglasses worked for Wilson, or one of the three in the meeting, and was just trying to 'scare' daniel stern off the case.

reply

well, i can honestly say if i was putting coins into a payphone and some stranger came along and ate my money, i would most certainly try to find another phone.

reply

One would think that anyone trying to really swallow a quarter would choke.

reply

This is one of the funniest scenes I have ever seen. I love C.H.U.D.

You want to talk to God? Let's go see him together, I've got nothing better to do.

reply

I love the look on "The Reverand's" face after the guy swallows that quarter.

reply

I think it was a dime instead of a quarter, a little easier to swallow; remember, this was the '80s.

The reason the Rev didn't go to another phone was because he stared at the goon. He's staring at him so long trying to figure out if the goon is going to follow him and harass him all day, if there's any reason to try to contact the media or he'll just be shut down at every turn by the goon. I think after the long staredown he has decided the goon won't let him do it so he gives up the notion of seeking out the media.

reply

He was trying to intimidate Stern's character and realized that since he probably couldn't pull off "intimidating" with his tight Izod shirt and his aviator glasses, he was going to have do something so bizarre that even a guy who works with the mentally ill would wonder "WTF???"

yea that guy had a look that said Sears Men's casual wear. Bet he owned a Member's Only jacket too.

reply

I said it elsewhere on this board but I'll repeat mesen here...
Did that guy look to anyone else like the big fella, Jammer, on the rig in The Abyss?
ya know, the one who breaks his leg and wakes up later jus in time to knock out one of the seals.
I'm frikkin SURE it was him!!!

and yes, a moment of pure, bizarre, film genius! I too bust a gut at the moment.

UPDATE!
A HAH! YES! John Bedford Lloyd! aka Jammer in the Abyss! I never forget a face!

On the commentary they say that the actor was sh*tting nickels for a week!

Thought I was havin' trouble with my adding. It's all right now

reply

That was rude of him! But I had to laugh!

"Well I Won't back Down...No I Won't Back Down..."

reply

Me and my buddy could not stop laughing. Weirdest way too intimidate someone ever!

I LOVED that scene, especially the staredown! It told the whole story by itself. No need for words.

Quality filmmaking? I think so.

Actually, if you watch his throat, you will see that he didn't swallow the coin, there is no swallowing movement of his throat.

Never depend on anything and you will never be disappointed.

reply

So the character doesn't swallow it because the actor isn't up for it?

I think it's heavily implied. If he didn't swallow it, it would take but a punch in the gut to have him spit it out.
