Mickey pissed me off about the dog

How could he let the dog freeze to death? Yes, he was far, far worse to Francine and the kids, but what a monster!

reply

I agree! He was almost as bad to the family's cat though. The dog was worse in a way, because she was in pain and died slowly. In the book, the youngest daughter (Francine had 4 kids in real life, not 3) finds a stray cat and tries to adopt it but Mickey won't let her. So Nicole (the little girl) sneaks it in.
Mickey finds it later and throws it out.
The girl (being a kid) sneaks it back in. Mickey grabs it, twists its neck until he breaks it, then tosses the cat into the weeds in the backyard. Francine finds Nicole crying so hard she can't speak, but Mickey has left to go out.

That guy was such a brute in almost every way possible. The movie just touched on what he did, he was worse in the book.

If there's anything I despise and have no use for it's an animal abuser. Francine Hughes and even the kids had a voice, but when some piece of dung tortures animals I'm tempted to kick his ass long, deep and continuously. Don't get me wrong. I'm not one of these extremists who thing guns, hunting and fishing should all be outlawed. After all, we have to eat to survive. But to me anybody who would torture a dog or a cat is a worthless bully and coward at heart.

That is why Francine's lawyer brought up the dog incident during the trial, to show how cruel a person Mickey really was. Although some people may not equate animal cruelty with domestic violence, it had to have had some impact on the jury.

reply

I had not seen the movie in some years but the dog incident made me cry. I still think about it even after watching the movie last night.

reply

Definently one of the worst things Mickey had done.

reply

It was worse in the book. He would throw the dog in the wall and kick it to upset the children. And then it had to stay out in the dog house all the time. When it was in heat Francine and the children wanted to bring it inside, but they couldn't for Mickey. The dog was raped by all these dogs that would come into the garden. And it gave birth to the puppys alone in the dog house, because Mickey would not let them bring it inside. Francine and the children came out in the end and three puppies layed dead on the ground and the dog still had one dead puppy inside of her. Mickey refused to bring the dog to the vet and to let it stay inside the house, and the next morning it had frozen to death outside.

Really one of the most upsetting things I've ever read. Encluding all the horrible things he did to Francine and the children whom he also hit. It was a lot worse in the book.

reply

OMG. I remember that part of the movie always upsetting me, but obviously the book's version is much worse. A part of me isn't surprised since he took pleasure in beating the hell out of his wife, but... That's beyond evil.

Don't eva let nobody tell you you ain't strong enough

reply

Indeed, and it really draws you to a conclusion that a person would have to be pretty STUPID to mourn his death, to feel sorry for his death, he killed their pets, he tried to kill his wife, he would've killed the kids if he'd had the chance and was in the right enough mood, and he walked away from everything he did every time. I say more power to Francine for what she did, nobody else was going to do anything to protect society from Mickey Hughes.

reply

True horror,

I don't even know if I want to get the book, because the incidents portrayed by Mickey sound even worse. What other things did Mickey do in the book that are not talked about in the movie.

I feel worse for the dog then her. Dog didn't have a choice. She did.

I agree. Francine had at least 3 times where she had left him and was safe, and she returned to him every darn time.

A dog is mistreated to death in this movie! Ok I'm never watching it; I can't take animal abuse.
Someone hits me it's bad enough, you hurt an innocent animal and I'm gonna set it off!

Exactly, you know people can go on and on and on about it's a wife's fault for not getting divorced, which she did, not moving out, which she did, not getting a restraining order, which she did, but how do they expect a pregnant dog in labor locked out in freezing temperatures to defend itself against an abusive bastard who allows it to freeze to death in mid-birth and its pups?

One of my aunts abusive husbands drowned kittens in front of her and my cousins.

Men like this are crazy! Micky reminds me of one of the men who beat my aunt. He could look wild eyed like he was high. He scared me.
