Card Trick Thingy Game

Hey, does anyone know where I can learn that card game thing that the guy on the bus did?? I really want to know it!!!! Thanks!

reply

Good luck! I've been trying to learn that trick since the movie first came out! I can only say search the internet.

I think it's something Fisher Stevens made up, because according to Sayles' commentary, he did it when he read for the part at the urging of the casting director. That's how it got into the script, because Sayles remembered seeing Stevens do it previously.

Yeah, interesting trick, but a little annoying as well, no? or maybe it's just the guys voice.....

definitely. The trick was pretty interesting, though the character was annoying. However, I thought he was very real - the ultimate card-trick kid.

'You wanna see a card trick? No, really - it's a story....'

My fave scene in 'Brother..' and the first time I saw the awesome, and very under-rated Fisher Stevens.

I could actually do the trick, but only by organising the cards, so I guess that doesn't really count.

Mind you, I was only about 13 at the time.

I think it was the subway!

It's a simple trick that just requires a good memory and a stacked, marked deck. Put the cards into the correct order to do the trick, and when the 'mark' cuts the cards, take the cut off - that's the "He was gone 5, 10, 15, 17 minutes" thing - dumping the extra cards to get back to the story. Memorizing the patter will be the most of learning it.

There's a great version of this card trick in the movie "the Aristocrats" as well. I had an old acquaintance that could do it- you have to order the deck correctly as the previous post stated.

the young fisher stevens, man his voice is annoying. everytime i see him in a film, i expect him to speak with the indian accent he used on the film Short Circuit. the card trick was awesome though and the character he played was pretty much like someone you would meet in a new york subway train.

awesome trick! Fisher Stevens is cool, can't believe that's him! Great in Short Circuit, really liked him in Hackers.

I think the first time I saw Fisher Stevens, was when he was interviewed by Leonard Nimoy on Nickelodeon's old Lights Camera Action show. He does a version of the card trick (with them cutting back and forth between him doing it for Nimoy, and the scene in the movie). He was actually on the show to promote his next film, My Science Project (which has since become one of my all time favorites), but Nimoy brought up the card trick, so they pull out the deck of cards and he does it.

For me, the funniest line is at the end, when he says "Want to see me make the white people disappear?".

I love Fisher Stevens and he was great in here! That card trick was really awesome too, he really did that on the spot too. I agree, that last line of his was awesome too LOL!

I don't know the intricacies of the trick, but the one performed in the movie is a variation of a trick called Sam the Bellhop.

A very similar trick can be found on YouTube:

Bill Malone has been doing the trick since at least the early 90s... probably sooner. He used to show up on TV magic specials doing it from time to time.
