Scenes on the streets of NYC?

They look so authentic, I was wondering if they were filmed by closing off the streets and using extras, or if they were done with a hidden camera and real, unsuspecting people? Anybody know?

doing it on the sly is totally illegal, as you need permits, but thats not to say its never done.... I know many of the scenes in Rocky where Stallone is running around Philly were filmed on the sly (no pun intended).

but back in '84, you can't really 'hide' a film camera, not to mention, it was probably on a dolly, which is rather big and has an operator sitting on it.

Your best clue is the surrounding people.... Are they totally not looking at Woody? If so, then they are all probably extras, and were told not to look.

But closing off a city block for a shoot is rather routine in the film biz, even in New York.
