Woody Allen can ACT!

This is definitely his best acting job. I know many peole who hate Woody and his movies, but this is movie is different from the typical Woody genre of movies. It is heartfelt, lovable and has some series elements of tragedy mingled with the usual streaks of comedic excellence t hat we associate with all Woody movies. I would put it right after Annie Hall, Play it again Sam and Sleeper.

"He was nominated for an Oscar for acting"

And rightly so. I have never understood those who say Allen can't act. Certainly he plays a similar role in virtually every film he's been in--so did Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd, Fields, the Marx Brothers, Laurel and Hardy, Bob Hope, and quite probably every other great screen comedian. That he is able to play such beautiful variations on this nebbish, neurotic theme is a testament to Allen's genius not only as a comedian, but as a dramatic actor. Each of Woody's characters (at least in his, um, "later, unfunny? films") is very unique, and each is developed with a subtle psychological and emotional wisdom (in both writing and execution) that is stunning.

There's still several of Woody's films I need to see, but this is among his best performances. I do rate his performance in Hannah and Her Sisters higher than in Broadway Danny Rose. However, his performance here is quite good.

how much of this performance was based on Dom Irrera? or is it the other way around?

Dom Irrera claims to have gotten his material from his life. I love them both. You must order Dom Irrera's dvd "Is this thing on?" Hilarious!

Woody is good at playing himself.

He was very good in The Front too.

It is certainly one of his most interesting roles and a fabulous performance for sure. Roger Ebert put it very well in his review in saying something along the lines of Danny Rose starting out as a caricature and becoming more and more of a real person towards the end of the movie.

Could any hell be more horrible than now and real?
