Greatly Under Appreciated in its Time

Looking back at the films released in 1984, its amazing 'The Bounty' didn't garner Oscar attention or more critical acclaim. I think its a far better film than any of the BP nominees from that year, i.e., Amadeus, Places in the Heart, A Passage to India, A Soldier's Story, The Killing Fields.

30+ years later, it has stood the test of time better as well. Amadeus and Killing Fields were good films, the rest were forgettable.

Yes, very well done all the way through. I think Gibson was good, but I do agree with the assessment that his performance was a bit bland as well. Good film nonetheless. The Taitian girls didn't hurt.

It's imo the 2nd best film of 1984 behind Amadeus, no one was gonna top that movie lol.

It's a shame this one coulda easily won several Oscars. First it shoulda been nomed for Best Picture. Hopkins shoulda got nommed for Best Supporting Actor (he really coulda won it as ot was a weak field, Pat Morita who I love got nominated that year and some flukey guy won it. Tony was way better than he was!) Also seeing this winning potentially for Cinematography and Score as Vangelis had another killer score.

No lie if it had came out in 1985 it may have legitly won Best Picture that year; it only had Out of Africa vs it lol.

For some reason this film completely passed me by , and i was addicted to films in the 80s!

I think "Amadeus" is a MUCH better film. IMHO "Amadeus" is genuinely great and absolutely gripping every time I see it, while "Bounty" is merely good.

But then, I love opera.
