I thought it could have been because he had noticed Marty was not in the chair at the club when he went back to look for his lighter and thus wondered if he was dead. He was not going to wonder this time. And apparently he didn't want to use a bullet from his pistol which he used to shoot through the wall. Earlier in the film. Ray had been holding the object used to smash his head.
