You are a child of the universe

This was in the faux credits during the first skit were joel and the bots dressed up as the characters. Any idea why?

IIRC, when this movie was released in the US, the distributor decided to save some money by buying the rights to all of the movie EXCEPT the opening and closing credits. That way, the movie could legally be called a "clip", which is much less expensive to acquire the rights for. As for credits, the distributor simply threw up some scenes from ANOTHER movie they owned, while showing the credits on black title cards on the bottom half of the screen. That's what Joel and the bots were mocking during that skit.

The same thing happened with Pod People, or whatever it's actually called.

It's a good idea to actually read what the original poster wrote before attempting a reply...

It is a quote from the Max Ehrmann poem Desiderata. "A famous poem and declaration of what is essential to one's life and how to live peacefully." They are making fun of Ator and The Great One's half baked philosophy from the movie.
And although it was not the proper answer to the original question, thank you Letesla for helping me understand why the heck the opening and closing credits did not match the movie. That has nagged me since I first saw this MST3K episode.

I thought it was especially funny in that context since it was on a very popular poster back in the 60s and hung on a lot of dorm room walls.

Hey, it's me, the OP with a new name.

Four years later and I come back to this page. Wow, I'd forgotten about asking that question. I just watched the MST3K version again and it still makes me laugh.

Thanks for the info about the poem and the copy-write dodge.

"You are a child of the universe." I thought it was the MST3Kers sending me secret messages back then, the way the sentence was broken in half.
