For MST3K fans: Cave Dwellers - Pod People?

For those who have seen both "The Pod People" & "Cave Dwellers" on MST3K or, heaven help ye souls, without Joel & the 'Bots, what is up with BOTH films having credit sequences containing slow-mo, Casio-soundtracked highlights of other films? "Pod" with the evil alien vs. farmers scenario, "Dwellers" with that ABC special cleaned up version of "Caliluga"-looking flick. With seperate directors & I think seperate countries, was this a trend of the 1980s B-Movies or something? If so, don't you think "Hobgoblins" should've had "Gremlins" highlights during its credit sequence?

Funny I was watching Cave Dwellers last night and was wondering the same thing. It looks so lame, especially at the end of the movie. It serves to do nothing but confuse.

"Why are you wearing that stupid human costume?"

The credit sequences were added by the redistribution company that MST3K used for many of their movies. Sometimes the movies were not allowed to be released under their original titles (Cave Dwellers is Ator 2, etc.) and therefore new credit sequences had to be made, hance the horrible (but funny) credits in the two movies that you mentioned. There are many others in the MST3K database with this same style credits.

Does anyone know the craptacular movie it came from?

reply

The footage used for the 'Pod People' credits was from a film called 'The Galaxy Invader', and the footage used for the 'Cave Dwellers' credits was from 'Taur the Mighty'.

I was just wondering that myself! I figured that it wasn't in the ACTUAL movie when Joel & the Bots didn't go out of their way to make fun of it. The MST3K doesn't usually try to point out and ridicule things that are THEIR own faults. Like choppy editing for time. (JC punches Gooch in "Sidehackers," then we go to a cutaway)

So I understand why they would change the title of the film, but why the opening credit sequence? Usually, don't they just use the same opening sequence, delete the original title and replace it with the alias?

reply

MST3K didn't change anything, it was the distribution company.

reply

The title sequences were created by the film distributer, Film Ventures International.

Aside from Pod People and Cave Dwellers, they did the titles for Godzilla Vs The Sea Monster, Stranded In Space, Space Travellers (Marooned)and I believe Master Ninja I and II..

Sadly, I saw Ator 2 at the theaters when I was around 13. Even then, when he gets on the hang glider, we busted out laughing.

...when he gets on the hang glider, we busted out laughing.

Thanks, Daddy'O! I had to plug the movie back in and jump to that scene.
*may go back and watch the whole movie again later tonight*

*Ator takes to the air with a hang glider*
Tom: "Oh - Come - On!!"
Crow: "What the..?!"
Joel: "I'm the luckiest boy in the world! I have slipped the surly bounds of earth and touched the hand of God."
Tom: "This is a little ridiculous. Okay, so he kills a deer... he tans the hides... stretches the skins... he makes an anodized aluminum frame, he learns how to extrude and weld all in about 5 minutes, huh? Learned aerodynamics..."

*singing*
"A-tor flies... and so does my hear-ar-art!"
- Tom Servo

*singing*
"We're flying so freee... Ator and meeee..."
- Tom Servo

*talks like he's in an air traffic controller's radio*
"Uh, Ator? This is George Kennedy. We're going to talk you down, now."
- Tom Servo

I think my very favorite line from them in the MST3K version is where the Kabuki-esque fighter and his band attacks Ator, Mila and Thong.

Tom: "Waw-WEE-ers... come out and PLAY-ay!"
(referring back to the line from "The Warriors")

Joel: "How much keefe is in this movie, anyway?"
Tom: "MILES O'Keefe."

Don't ask me what I think of you,
I might not give the answer that you want me to.

Fllyyy!

Saw this on the original MST3K on Comedy Central (about the time it switched names I believe). Man, that was the best thing to do on Saturdays... provided you had nothing to do.

I love the part where they talked about all the film's mistakes. Pretty good wihout a script I guess.

"How much O'Keefe?"

"Miles O'Keefe."

And Casio Demo Button by the great Karl Michael Demer!

Episode 403 City Limits was also distributed by Film Ventures International but it didn't get a title change for some reason.

I just finished watching Cave Dwellers, and I was wondering about that very thing! What is with both Cave Dwellers and Pod People stealing their credits from other movies?!

*after reading the other replies* Wow, that is just sad that the distribution company could not even afford the CREDITS. My God. *shakes head*

That being said... Ator going hang-gliding! Beautiful. Just beautiful.
