Wisdom teeth extraction without anaesthetic?

Is there any truth to the rumour that Nicholas Cage had his wisdom teeth extracted without anaesthetic prior to filming so that he could identify with his character more?

I've never seen the film, but this was mentioned in a Cage interview I recently read and I'm curious now.

And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

I don't know about wisdom teeth, but it looked like his character was missing two molars on the top (one on each side).

Nobody has their wisdom teeth extracted in order to identify with a character. They get them extracted because they're impacted or rotten. That's just silly.
