The terrible movie that even Eddie Murphy stripped apart

"I did a movie called Best Defense... now, that was the worst movie ever made."
-Eddie Murphy, hosting SNL, in his monologue

any other opinions?

reply

I completely agree, gotta be one of the worst.

correction: "Now, there's a movie that sucked real bad."

Unless he has mocked it in more than one SNL monologue, that is.

reply

come to think of it, you're right. at least he had the decency to have a sense of humor about it.

reply

No, it was the same alright:

"But the money they gave me to do it...Y'all would have done Best Defence II!"
"I was like: "WHAT? How DARE you give me a script like this! Oh that much money let's go!"
"Worst movie ever done in the history of everything and all of a sudden I wasn't that hot no more... So I called up the producer of SNL and said: 'err..you still got my dressingroom?'"

reply

They are replaying this episode tonight, so I had to look the movie up.

Now I am wondering - how much did he get paid?

reply

I guess I'm just partial to it cos've the parts with Dudley Moore talking dirty. lol

I agree 100%, and so did my mother and sister. We all went over to Spartanburg, SC on Saturday, July 28, 1984 to go the malls, and then ate at Red Lobster, as we often did for days in the 1980s, and that afternoon went to a theater to see this movie. All during it I thought how bad it was, and after getting out my sister said it wasn't worth seeing, my mother said she'd sure seen better, and then said she did not see how they could have taken two people as talented as Eddie Murphy and Dudley Moore and made a movie that bad. I agreed, and it has since been on my ten least favorite movies of all time list. This was also, by the way, the night of the opening ceremonies for the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angelas, which we did get home in time to see completely (and unlike this movie were very good).

Yay! Someone else on here from SC! And I'm from the upstate, as well! I wasn't even born when this movie came out, but just like Beatle Babe (who is just a little older, but NOT from SC LOL), the only reason I ever even heard of it is because of Dudley Moore. I agree that this movie was sort of a waste of his talent (cause gosh, wasn't he like one of the most talented people ever... comedy, acting, music, composing, etc.), but I like to think of it as he helped to make an otherwise crappy movie much better! With all the drama it seems he had with women in his life, you can't blame him for not making the best decisions as to which movies to do.

Apparently, when Eddie Murphy said that his movie Best Defense was the worst movie ever made, he had never seen the 1980 film "The Gods Must Be Crazy", which was released in the United States in 1984. The Gods Must Be Crazy is so bad that Best Defense deserved an Oscar for Best Picture in comparison. This movie was so bad that they had to inflict a Gods Must Be Crazy Part 2 upon the world in 1989, which I have yet to see to this day.

In addition, this was a long time before the career of Steven Soderburgh who has directed the most lame @$$ boring flicks of all time, except for Sex, Lies, and Videotape because of the masterful acting of James Spader.

"...how in the hell can you say that The Gods Must Be Crazy is the worst film ever made? Or even a bad film for that matter?"

He's a troll. Ignore him.

Douchebags like him post this crap on almost every board, trying to stir up an argument.

Like the dumb ass who posted on the Schindler's List board that "the Jews got what they deserved" -- he was just trying to provoke an argument. Or maybe he was a Republican.

Eddie was terrible in this movie. His lines were bad and so was he. He was also minimized which is probably why he complained afterwards.

Not surprisingly Murphy's scenes feel thoroughly disconnected from the rest of the film. Not even a young Eddie Murphy is capable of generating hilarity out of thin air and Best Defense gives him nothing to work with. Even with Murphy inside the tank the film sorely lacks urgency and momentum.
