Horrible band, and song at the club

Why does the club have a forties revival number with crappy glitter palm trees?
Why the zoot suit?
Why three blondes with hairy armpits?

This movie is s.h.i.t.e.

Kid Creole and the Coconuts are an iconic band formed by August Darnell, who previously fronted Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band. The Palace, in the movie, is supposed to be a hot music club, and that's why it was featuring cutting-edge performers. Jesus, they only appear for a few moments of the overall running time! What's the big deal? Who were you expecting, Madonna?

The OP obviously never heard of---and clearly isn't old enough to remember Kid Creole and the Coconuts---in real life, they were a very talented and popular band during the '80s with their throwback '40s sound mixed wonderfully with '80s R&B. That was how their stage act looked. I remember seeing their videos on BET back in the day, and the next year after this film they had a cool song called "Endicott" which was a huge hit for them and the closest they ever got to the pop charts--they should have had way more hits, as far as I'm concerned, because they never seemed to get the radio play their cool as all hell songs deserved. They were actual doing the big band sound before it became real popular again for a brief time in the mid-90s. I missed that part of the film, though.
