Miss Greer made 59 look very good.

Jane Greer was a goddess. Out of the Past is a masterpiece. This movie is a mess. I like Bridges but he's no Robert Mitchum. Woods is no Kirk Douglas and I wouldn't even put Rachel Ward and Jane Greer in the same ballpark. Why do they think they can remake a classic film and make it better? They almost never do.

This movie was a mess. But OUT OF THE PAST is overrated. An overblown Noir. Kirk Douglas is never really established to be dangerous or to even be into the girl at all. This movie takes time for Bridges to search and find this needle in a haystack while Mitchum breezes into a bar after guessing (not getting info on) what country she'd be in. James Woods is no Kirk Douglas That's for certain. But he's established as being more obsessed with the girl and, he's a lot creepier and more a menace than Douglas and his chin, both which'd be heroes from that point with a few exceptions.

Jacques T. is one of my favorite directors and I hardly think of anything pondering the work of Taylor Hackford. I think Mitchum is cooler than Bridges but I don't think he can out-act him. Mitchum has a wonderful one-note but, until he got older, he was kind of the same in everything.

I think this movie purposely upped the things about the original that were rushed and not fleshed-out. And yet, the middle of t his movie is just disastrous so I really do agree with the fact it's a mess. But, on the other hand, I think the mess aspect has pretty decent bookends. And I also think it took some coaxing for Bridges and Ward to fall in love. Again, with Mitch and Greer, like finding her, it was all just too damn easy.
