What is the point of this movie?

I have seen this movie over the years about 3-4 times total and still have not been able to discern a major point that this movie is supposed to make. Is it a love story, light action, thriller, but whatever it is, what's the main point of the movie...it just doesn't seem to make much sense....it does have decent car chase though...but someone please advise......

What I can't figure out is why a gangster would hire a fading football player to find his runaway girlfriend. Why not assign another gangster or hire a high-priced if unethical private detective? Also, what man can trust a woman who is obviously a stone-cold killer? I guess it's the old "He's/She's not that way with me," syndrome. Many women and men have fallen victim to it.

Watch it again--they had a history of fixing games together. Terry owed him. He was gonna eventually set him up with something, why not use him to find his girl. He had an idea where he was located. The ending was terrible and contrived, but movie wasnt bad.

Fixing games is one thing - finding a missing woman is another. Terry didn't have the brains to find a bar of soap in a drugstore. I suppose he figured it wouldn't be that hard and he underestimated his girfriend.

Take one old ilm noir thriller entitled "Out of the Past"
- Swap out detective and gangster moll characters
- Replace with rilly kewl hetero aspirational figures of the 80s (He plays football. She's a Patrick Nagel print)
- Make love in pyramid, etc.

Damned if it makes any sense

I see your point. They fit the 80s milieu better. It makes sense.

Terry showed he was smarter than you give him credit for.

As long as he was anywhere near that conniving, sociopathic bitch, he was stupid.

What is the point? My friend, a 'point' is hardly required for a film.

While there are a few holes in the script it basically is understandable, at least to me. That isn't to imply anything, just to state my view. It is a movie. When it was released I recall a great deal of criticism about it in comparison to Out of the past, another movie. While that argument seemed very clever and perhaps a little academic at the time it has been 30 years and finally I think Against All Odds stands alone as a pretty good effort. Time to stop beating the thing to death. I think that you can enjoy it for what it is, I recommend that it be watched without any prejudice. It isn't nearly as derivative as some still suggest. It can also be enjoyed as an interesting testament to the times, both for films and for the 80's in general. In particular, if you enjoy Taylor Hackford films as I do then you will enjoy this one too. Young Bridges, Ward and Woods - a very effective trio indeed.

To my mind, the real question is why someone who looked like Jake, with his criminal background, would send some hot guy like Terry and expect his girlfriend to stay loyal. Jeff Bridges has never looked better. :-)

There's someone in my head but it's not me.

Hmm, I've wondered that too. It's probable that Jake knew Jessie would be tempted by Terry, but didn't care, as he was used to her having her flings but always coming back to him time and again.

Totally agree with you bob-larrance. Not sure why any film has to have a point. OP. It's a story about a chain of events. That's about all you need a film to be. I thoroughly enjoy this one every time it's on tv.

This 'Emperor's New Clothes' mentality regarding remakes of old films drives me crazy. Very few gave a fig about the original but, as soon as it's remade, all of the 'experts' come out of the woodwork to proclaim how perfect the original was.

With the exception of the fact Kid Creole is featured in the movie (which really dates it), this one holds up well. It could just have easily have been made in the last five years.

It's a fun, sexy movie with some good performances. Get over yourselves and just take it at face value and enjoy it.

As long as the chain of events is entertaining, but if filmmakers are going to spend millions of dollars on a movie it helps if it has a point/message/moral rather than being pointless entertainment for the sake of entertainment. For instance, "Apocalypse Now" is long and meandering (like the river the characters travel up), but it has loads of depth and meaning. Even slice-of-life pictures can (and should) have a discernible point. It simply makes the entertainment more worthwhile.

Everybody's got their price.

I'm no expert, but . . . .

Also, that people like Terry and Jake are fools. Both of them were blinded by their love for Jessie, a manipulative sociopath who uses people and throws them away. In the end, it's pretty pathetic how Terry still can't see what she is and feels sad about being apart from her. He should realize that she's nothing but bad bad news and he's very lucky that his involvement with her ended, and he can go freely about his life without those kinds of entanglements.

I kinda asked myself that throughout the movie, but I did love the montage of Jessie and Terry and the scene where he is alone in his hut and is looking at a picture of Jake and Jessie and as he's on the phone with Jake he folds the pic so that he only sees Jessie, not sure why I love that part but it shows Terry is taking an interest in her and the Against All Odds theme is playing.

Y'know, I could eat a peach for hours

The best movies don't have a point.
