Best racing scene ever?

The sunset boulevard race scene is amazing, and a monumental change from the cheesy 70s films. Even today, I haven't witnessed anything better.

reply

yeah, that was a damn good scene.

reply

Damn good scene, but I'd still rate it behind Bullitt.

reply

I agree with you there Indeep, Bullitt has the best car chase in my book. But the scene in Against All Odds is very well done!

reply

hey you all, are you fotgetting the car/train chase in 'The French Connection'? Nothing beats enervating scene, ever!

reply

Guys...Guys...guys: The question was...the best car RACE scene ever. So, not "Bullit" or "French Connection". Maybe the Challenger and the Jag in "Vanishing Point," maybe...

The in car footage from Grand Prix still can't be topped.

reply

The greatest, grandaddy movie car chase of all time is the original 1974 Gone In 60 Seconds.

reply

Absolutely the BEST movie car chase of all time!

reply

[deleted]

No, not forgetting it.. But he was chasing a TRAIN..that ran on tracks, so he knew exactly where it was going. It was exciting, but Bullitt stands alone

reply

7 ups?

What the $%*& is a Chinese Downhill?!?

reply

don't forget the car chase in seven-ups

What the $%*& is a Chinese Downhill?!?

reply

Absolutley! Bullitt is unbeaten in the car chase stakes, closely followed by Ronin.

reply

The best chase scene in a movie bar none is BULLITT

reply

It's certainly the most thrilling I've ever seen. I saw the movie on TV recently, and although it's not a great film overall, the racing scene is of real merit.

reply

I dont know about best ever, film makers just keep raising the bar

Back when this first came out it was a real rush for me, this car race, the start, the near misses, etc-- to the heartstopping skidding to a stop behind the garbage truck---adding intensity to the whole Jake and Terry thing that built up throughout the movie to its climax in the 'endgame'.
Also the fact that it was just a little race between friends, rather than a Cops n Robbers chase(where were the cops anyway?)was also cool.

Funny, I used to like this movie a lot, but now I find the plot kind of shallow,
like most of the characters and the subject matter...but it still has its good moments, like the race.....

Including 'chases', the other one that strikes me for pure intensity was the one in 'Live and Die in L.A.'. I saw one on cable recently that was more up to date, with a huge rush, that was the beginning of '2Fast2Furious', but I think they're using computer effects now to augment the scenes, Im not sure...I was still impressed.....

reply

I love the movie though i didn't actually like the car racing scene. For a normal movie Basic Instinct 1 has a better racin scene than Against All odds

reply

All great car scenes.. Whether two guys racing each other just for fun and ego like Bridges and Wood's characters; cops chasing the bad guys; cops chasing the undercover guy (Live & Die in LA); Gosling stunt guy character chased by drug dealer in Drive; Carusso in Jade ( good one I had forgotten); Ronin; Grand Prix/awesome footage ; Grease ( just kidding); French Connection and Bullit both in their own categories.. McQueen is still my favorite even if that is technically a car chase and not a race.. Fast & Furious 1; never saw Gone / 60 seconds.. 7 Ups is a good scene too., great thread.. And yes.. I like fast cars!! ??

reply

Although I loved Basic Instinct the film and her Lamborghini ... the music editing was superb.. it's still not in my top ten like the others mentioned. A few Bond films come to mind for good chase scenes too!! ??? And I loved Against All Odds and was In my early 20's and had to go to Mexico after seeing this film.. Great acting by Woods and Bridges and showed more range for Ward. Taylor Hackford helps too being the great drector that he is!!

reply

I think the best racing scenes I've seen recently were in "Grand Prix".

reply

I know this originally was the best 'racing' scene, but since so many people are mentioning chases, I'd have to say that the one in Bourne Identity was pretty damn good.

reply

The moon buggy chase Diamonds are Forever.

reply

Not.

reply

So weird - I thought the same thing when I watched this movie recently. Very well done especially for 1984!

Very true, I was watching this movie on cinemax right now, and when I got to the racing scene I was so impressed and that led me to check it out here, and viola I saw this thread. Some tv network should create a top ten list/homage of all time racing scene and include this one.

reply

Viola? Isn't that like a large violin?

reply

No, actually it is a small town in Warren County Tennessee..!! Earnest (Jim Varney) used to say "viola" instead of "voila"..!! Funny stuff.!!

There needs to be a "like" button in IMDb!!

Now if that bastard so much as twitches, I'm gonna blow him right to Mars.

I'll vote this as the best racing scene ever. We won't ever get scenes like this or movies like Bullitt again. Ridiculous CGI effect have destroyed realistic car chases/races in movies forever.

I'll throw Death Proof out as a great modern chase. I don't think Tarantino used cgi in that.

reply

A very underrated car chase scene is "The Master Touch" with Kirk Douglas. The others mentioned are great too, but as a fan of car chases I suggest you all look this film up.

(Above: the guy meant “Voila” by-the-way)
I wanted to mention this separately: A TERRIBLE scene I mean completely irresponsible. Bone-fide chases are different -- usually police chasing someone for ostensibly legitimate reason – This was drag-racing with complete impunity & actually shocked me a bit – these days especially (when many injuries & deaths, my area & everywhere, in similar cases) completely irresponsible – my reaction was, where were the cops, then or afterwards, with a traffic ticket? – “Politically incorrect” (hopefully I’m not a wuss or something!), 2 jokers – even if a ‘staged scene’ -- endangering many innocent drivers, these 2 (as far as I could tell) without seatbelts – and after it’s over, into parking lot ha ha like it’s nothing. well-done & all that, but beside the point I'd say, people might think this is exciting, but how many young people try to imitate this with too-often disastrous results. A token admonition at least – motorbike cop meets them at parking lot, "hey here’s a $200 fine" (whatever) – to discredit such stupid behavior.
(add)
something ties in with this – yesterday, saw a sign on highway, in French (I’m in Quebec) saying in effect “Our roads are not racetracks! 140 km/hr. = 658 DOLLARS fine & 10 demerit points”. Wow heavy-duty but gets point across. Not to belabor this, but again the problem with ‘race-scene’ in this movie is that it was completely gratuitous, even as fictional scene endangering many people – 2 schmucks showing off muscle cars, like boys on a joy-ride, oblivious to people around them; if Jeff Bridges character hit garbage truck & he flew into the dumpster – maybe poetic justice (but would be the end of the movie!) -- & something sad might have happened, like Doggie gets hurt… – anyway, different from “French Connection” etc. where police action is the extenuating circumstance for risking life-&-limb.

I have to agree with jasheco. However 'exciting' it may be to watch this scene, it glorifies highly irresponsible behavior, and in real life I've witnessed far too many stupid young males attempting this sort of thing, just in the last two years, in a metropolitan area much, much smaller than LA. They're self-centered jerks who think, "I (we) feel like doing this, and that's all that matters. Never mind that we're putting other people in danger-- if we can get away with it, then it's justified!" One idiot was arrested for doing 90 mph in traffic in a 50-mph zone with his two-year-old child in the car. Another one told his buddy he was going to go 'racing' on a twisty two-lane highway, and while passing someone on a blind curve at 87 mph, he ended up killing a woman when he plowed into her oncoming car. Then he lied about it during his trial: "Oh, no, I was only going 45."

Perhaps the least believable aspect of this scene is that you don't see the other cars going off the road and crashing into each other while trying to avoid being hit head-on by these two boys-pretending-to-be-men. (And Jeff Bridges' "panic stop" behind the truck wasn't too convincing. I don't care what kind of Brembo brakes he had, or whatever-- he wouldn't have been able to stop THAT fast.)
