Why didn't actor William Sylvester reprise his role as Heywood Floyd?

Does anyone know?

reply

Although I've read articles which vaguely state he simply didn't want to reprise the role, I doubt he was even asked. 2010 was going to be a much different film to 2001, and MGM obviously wanted a star name for such an expensive production. Scheider was a well known lead from his 70s blockbusters and had also won an Oscar by then too so he could give it some weight.

They should simply have made Scheider his successor. There was no need to have the character played by a different actor. They could have offered Sylvester a brief part in the film. If he accepted, great. If not, that's fine too. Scheider is a fine and charismatic actor, but he just isn't the same character or personality as Floyd in 2001. Let's be honest, Floyd was a bit of creepy dude, and his protestations of innocence in the second film just don't square with his actions in the first film. It was entirely unnecessary self-inflicted wound on Hyams part. I have a problem with the film's script and some of the decisions made, but not with Scheider's performance, per se.

reply

Exactly! The only reason I can think of is that the book had already been written and they were sticking to it? If so then that would be a stupid reason, given that the 2001 movie differed from the book and even the 2010 book differed significantly from the 2001 book? What else could it be though?

The movie takes place nine years after the events of "2001" but "2010" wasn't filmed until 1983, so Sylvester was 16 years older than he was when he filmed "2001." He would've appeared much older and frankly, his Heywood Floyd was a bit too "Ozzie and Harriet,"
IMHO. His performance sticks out like a sore thumb, when compared with virtually anyone else who appeared in "2001."

Although, I'll agree that Scheider's Floyd was too much of a departure from Sylverster's performance and that made the two Floyds almost completely different people, instead of being the same character, nine years later. Scheider's Floyd was pushy, rude and not very refined, in stark contrast to Sylverster's characterization, which was sterile, apologetic and bland. Personally, I'd rather have seen Scheider play the role in "2001." That would have been interesting, to say the least.

Clearly he wasn't asked, if you are going to make a movie based on 'random character #27' from the Harry Potter series you aren't going to hire the unknown who played the original part, you will hire the biggest actor on the block. Probably one of the pre-pubescent scrotums from X-men: First Class. Like the yodelling kid with the whiney voice or some *beep*

They wanted a big name I assume. I remember when I first saw 2010 years ago I didn't even realize they were the same character. That's not to say I think Scheider was miscast though. His version of the character worked well in context. I pictured Sylvester when was reading the book though.

They should of made RS not Floyd but someone else. I mean they turned Dr. Chandra into white bread.

Besides in most DC jobs the people leave after around 5 years anyway.

reply

William Sylvester was too square for the 1980s, so they had to bring in the guy from Jaws to spice things up.

Ben Kingsley woul have been perfect as Chandra. Lithgow as Floyd would have been more believable he's good t playing scientists, Roy is better at playing cops and badasses

No doubt. I never understood Bob Balaban in that role at all. I don't know if two roles can be considered typecasting but all I could see when Balaban was on screen was Laughlin from "Close Encounters." The original character's name was Dr. Sivasubramanian Chandrasegaram Pillai, for Chrissakes! In "2010," the character became R. Chandra. I always thought his first name should be Ringo.

Even in "2001" HAL stated that his "teacher" (programmer) was Mr. Langley at the HAL plant in Urbana, Illinois.
