Was this show cancelled?

Since it was the best show on Television and very popular, I am curious as to why a third season wasn't filmed. Does anyone know? Please don't guess. Thank You.

I read an interview a couple of years ago with Johnathan Lynn (one of Yes, Minister/Yes Prime Minister's two writers) and he said they stopped simply because they were happy with what they'd done and didn't want to go on forever and spoil the previous series.

And I agree with him - as much as I'd have loved to see more episodes, they made the right choice by stopping when YPM was popular and not letting it get tired and worn by churning out scripts - the show wouldn't have worked if the quality had slipped.

As I recall Paul Eddington was also diagnosed with the skin cancer that eventually killed him during the filming of "Yes, Prime Minister". From memory he spends a lot of time sat down in this series, which I seem to recall was because he couldn't stand easily.

The series went out on a high, which was good. It's always a shame when a series get flogged to death - Red Dwarf, alas, went this way sometime ago.

no he didn't ! he died in the 90's long after the show had ended!

But he was first diagnosed with the cancer during the show! Paul Eddington fought the disease for the next two decades but sadly succumbed in the 1990s.

Considering this was a follow on from Yes Minister its a fair call that it had a decent run and yes it was far better to end on a high.

And given the radio 4 series preceded the tv show there's actually a great deal of material altogether.

And I suppose he couldn't be promoted above prime minister in the next series!

That is what I was thinking. You can't really say it only had 2 series when in reality it the last one was the 5th.

Unlike US TV the Brits generally don't thrash a concept to death until everyone is completely bored with it.
Same thing happened with Fawlty Towers, The Office, Reggie Perrin, Good Life.
There are exceptions that prove the rule, but Yes Prime Minister went out at the top of its game.
