I lived overseas and saw a lot of the unedited anime shows. Waaaaaaay more blood and violence than the US. Robotech saved quite a bit of it.

I don't really remember Robotech (other than the name), so I can't comment on the violence in it.

I got GoLion on DVD after seeing that clip. Its downright brutal.

Heh heh. I can imagine the Japanese being told this is a hit as a kids show.
