Visitor Voices

Not sure how the effect was produced in the mini series but does anyone know if it is possible to duplicate the effect if you wanted to do a visitor costume for a haunted house?

Pitch the voice down without changing the speed, double it with the original, use a slight distortion filter, and put them both out of phase. Peace.

The everyday happens every day.

Please let me understand better.
1) How much should I pitch the voice down? Is 50% of the original OK, or should it be less pitched down than that (=closer to the original)?
2) After I pitched it down, do I need to invert the phase of the obtained sound, so that the positive peaks become negative and viceversa?
3) Do the two sounds (original and modified) have to be overlapped exactly, or does the modified sound need to follow the original a little later?
4) What kind of filter should I use? "Distortion filter" is a little generic...

I am totally cluless where the last 2 posts are concerned. It seems that, for the purposes of a haunted house costume at least, it is not going to be possible.
