Why remove the voice alterations?

I missed the reverberation effect.

I remember at the time that there were two reasons. It didn't work with all of the acors and it was too expensive.

I agree, it sounded like the original recording was there plus another one that was modified.

I think that back in the 1980s (with the editing technology) it would have been too much effort / cost to do it for 22 episodes or whatever the count was, on an action television budget.

It's easy to recreate in Audacity. Copy original voice, pitch shift down 20%, then reduce volume by half. This is then played alongside the original voice.

First of all, why would it have to be Audacity? There are zillions of audio editors.

Second of all, I don't think that's going to recreate it exactly (there seems to be a metallic robotic vocoder sound there as well).

Third of all, that would be a huge amount of work to redo all the soundtracks this way, and only change the voices of the 'visitors'.

By the way, why wouldn't it have worked with all actors? Voice is voice, and the effect would be the same. It might have sounded a bit different with different voices, but surely the effect itself would have TECHNICALLY worked.

Or did the poster mean that it wouldn't have sounded as good with all actors, and in that way, it 'wouldn't have worked'? Which actors were those that had these problematic voices?

I mean, the security guy at one point sort of half-whispers, and it still works just fine. So what kind of a voice would it have to be not to "work"?

I think saying that it wouldn't have worked with all actors is incredibly vague and leaves an enormous amount of room for all kinds of interpretations. So what was meant, exactly?

They should have explained the voice change on the show, it really bugged me that they didn't bother to come up with ANYTHING.

I figured they could have created a device like the humans did to alter their voices. It would be worn underneath their skin suits, or maybe even inside their throats (perhaps with minor surgery). But I like how Hendu71 came up with the long exposure to earth's air as the reason, that's a good one.

Money.

Much like why the visitors don't use their spaceships that often in the series, but choose to move around in jeeps, vans and goddamn dirt bikes.
