Transformers was never originally one word. It was always Trans Formers

Does that mean they were formerly Trans?

Seriously, EVERY old G1 logo has it broken into 2 words, even the artwork for the toy packaging.

The logo is shown here on this board's thumbnail, and here is the toy packaging:

Always Trans Formers.

Bored, huh?

So bored you gonna make fictional robots into transexuals?

It’s just a SPACE limitation.

Nah I'd been excited because a G1 Optimus truck done as an in-scale die cast vehicle is finally coming out, and that's when I noticed the logo and wondered if it was always like that.

Almost time for lunch though

reply

No, it was still one word. Marvel was promoting the comic pretty heavily in those early days. They would even run advertisements in their comics saying "WHO OR WHAT ARE THE TRANSFORMERS?" before it took off.

reply

I dunno man... The Marvel covers split it up the same way.

Not sure how it can even be one word with that Autobot logo in the middle!

reply

They didn't use the logo in the teaser advertisements. They just spelled it out as one word.

reply

Ah but the logo is official!

It's not like I'm being all that serious, but it is split up into two words.

reply

Umm, kind of. I mean, it was a freaking long word. That’s what it came down to - how to fit it on the packaging without making the font tiny.

If you can find anything in early media releases that it was anything but The Transformers, then fair enough you have a point. But otherwise it’s just a packaging font size issue.

reply

I wonder if they even called a font a font in 1984.

reply

The typeface kind of β€œfont” is the easier to explain. We use β€œfont” loosely to mean a style of type (e.g., Comic Sans, the official Microsoft font), but, more precisely, a β€œfont” is a complete set of a certain style of type, i.e., including a complete alphabet, punctuation, numerals, etc. This β€œfont” first appeared in English in the late 16th century, based on the French β€œfonte,” from β€œfondre,” meaning β€œto cast” as one β€œcasts” objects from molten metal. The first use of β€œfont” in English was, in fact, to mean simply β€œcast iron.” Type at that time was, of course, cast from metal, but it wasn’t until the late 17th century that β€œfont” (then often in the form β€œfount” or even β€œfound”) was used in the β€œfamily of type” sense (β€œBreak down the Printing-Presses, melt the Founds.” 1723).

In the earliest conceptualization of this cartoon, it was actually 3 words - Trans for MERS. It was originally going to be about a group of transgender people championing the cause of Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome. I think the form-altering robots from space concept ended up being a wise change.

reply

Well, it was a ripoff of β€œSpace Giants” with robots that turned into rockets so...Japanese.

reply

Ah, the fond memories of watching that show when I was very young. Goldar and company, and Rodak (?) I think was the villain.

reply

I do always get them confused with Johnny Sako and Spectreman though, so I'm not positive if those guys are from Space Giants.

reply

No, Johnny Socko was that annoying kid talking into a wristwatch to control a Japanese robot that inexplicably looks like a pharaoh. And member of the β€œUnicorn” organisation. I don’t get that name anymore than their nemesis Emperor Guillotine who looked like Cthulhu and his β€œGargoyle” gang.

And Spectreman was the dude who protected Earth from Space Apes(w...t...f?)

And if you remember INFRAMAN...he was the inspiration for those vomitable Power Rangers.

But Space Giants...RODAK was the man, man!

Space vampire with an army of melting lugo men.
