Why are so many of the G1 Decepticons purple?

Is this explained anywhere, either by a design choice or some kind of backstory? Personally I liked it. Purple was always a very threatening color to me because of my obsession with the transformers in the 80s, lol.

Just curious if there's a public reason or discussion on it.

I don't know but it's an awesome pick!
Also, bright green or just silver/grey.
If you think about it, they are the colors that a photo negative looks like.
Like, reverse of reality, vs more basic colors for the good guys (O.P. is blue and red).
So again, great pick!

Good point on the photo negative!

I've always loved Shockwave (who doesn't), and the purple color just heightens his mystique.

=)

Meh...my fave was Devastator.

But the purple/lime green action figure looked like a damn L.A. Lakers advert.

LIME GREEN?...GET THAT SHIT OUTTA HERE.

Any questions?

I OBVIOUSLY KNOW DEVASTATOR AND HIS COLOR SCHEME..THAT SHIT AINT NO LAKER COLORS THOUGH.MORE LIKE THE ICP AND THE JOKER BUILT A SEX ROBOT.

reply

Well, back in the day I had a POS System 3 television and yellow looked like lime green.

But Devastator kicks ass even in real world construction vehicle colors.

He could be all John Deere green or classic orange/red/yellow and still be my fave Transformer.

OPTIMUS PRIME AND GRIMLOCK FOREVER!

Devastator was awesome, I still remember that day visiting my Grandpa in New York when he gave me the complete set.

Yes the color is odd... and FYI, there is an updated version by Takara:

There's also a $50 Shockwave out right now that it kind of part of the "Studio Series" but they're doing Cybertron-era versions of the characters in high detail. He looks SO good, it's the best Shockwave I've seen and I'm considering buying it.

I did plunk down $50 on the Studio Series Blackout from the 2007 movie. He's my favorite Transformer of all time, cartoons included. They did a great job designing him to be the premiere Transformer you see in the opening of the movie, and that opening sequence is just fantastic.

I still have the complete original green devastator.

God damnit, now you blowholes have me on Amazon placing toy orders!

Next I’ll be building a construction site diorama!

Be careful, because the adult collector market for Transformers right now is HOT and you could drop $10,000 easily.

That's just a preview, too.... I'm getting Blitzwing as soon as it's available.

I just want a decent Devastator because oddly enough the crew I used to work with used those exact vehicles.

I guess I was Scrapper since I operated the front end loader.

Oh, except nobody drove a cement mixer.

Oh well...new project...

reply

the cement mixer is a leg.
