DVD set

I bought the complete series DVD set and the picture quality is bad. Looks like a poor VHS transfer. I was actually thinking of picking up the old VHS set to see if the quality was better. I understand there were also some international DVD releases. Anyone know which release has the best picture quality? Or how the DVDs compare with the old VHS set?
