What was your fav episode and what happened on the finale?

I used to watch this show weekly when I was a kid. Some of the episodes had real depth. I think this was during the Miami Vice era so nobody gives this show its due. Not sure why it was cancelled or why the cast didn't go on to do bigger things. I would like to purchase a few of the episodes, in particular, the episode where Joe Penny goes to his high school reunion.

What happened on the finale? I know Joe & Perry did some T.V. movies but I think they could have done more.

Thank you writers of Riptide...

This is NOT the entire series. It is the two hour pilot and 8 1-hour episodes, all taken off vintage VHS tapes. He lists the quality as 6/10, I would give it maybe a 4

On the other hand, you get to see 9 Riptide episodes again. Is is better than nothing.

(The pilot is taken from the NBC 4 broadcast in NY, which is where I watched it first run. The others are from the USA network. The old commercials are almost as entertaining as the show).

This series didn't have a proper ending to my knowledge, it was suddenly cancelled out of the blue, it was a top 20 (if not top 10) show consistently.

It was my favorite show at the time! 8(

I figure now, one of the main actors or all of them wanted more $ and that killed it, perhaps?

If I recall this show followed the A-Team, and another action show after I think, great stuff! ;)

I think Riptide was in the trio with Magnum PI and Simon & Simon on Thursday nights. It was a great night of action programs and I was glued to the tv set for those 3 hours.

reply

Actually, RIPTIDE was an NBC show not a CBS program as MAGNUM and SIMON&SIMON were. RIPTIDE aired Tuesday nights at 9 PM following The A-Team for 2 and a half seasons be fore moving to Fridays at 8 PM for it's final 7 episodes. DPOWERS>

The series ended backwards. "Echoes" was supposed to be the season three ender and instead they used "If You Can't Beat 'Em, Join 'Em" which was a spoof of 'Moonlighting'. 'Moonlighting' killed 'Riptide' -- not the actors.

It was G R E A T ! ! The lineup was A-Team, Riptide, and Tales of the Gold Monkey (Another lost classic) I considered Tuesday night my Favorite night when I was a kid because of these shows, my mother would actually let me stay up past my bedtime so I could watch them. Thanks Mom...

That was my FAVORITE episode!!! That and Be True to Your School Now!

How do i find episodes of this show on tape or dvd. Someone please help me.

reply

Stephen J Cannell also used that storyline from "Be True to Your School" word for word on one of his other shows(Sonny Spoon).

I was a big fan of the show and this is the one episode I will always remember. It was fine acting and a touching theme, I actually cried back then. I must have watched so many reruns of it, because in retrospect the show seemed to last longer than only two seasons.

Those were the days of Simon and Simon, Heart to Heart, The Fall guy, Remington Steele etc. Although there are great shows on today I miss that childhood feeling of waiting all week for a new show and spending the afternoons with them, reenacting the shows in school next day with friends. It was great.

You may think that, I couldn't possibly comment

There were so many fantastic, memorable episodes that it's difficult to pick just one. Those that really stand out in my mind include "Fuzzy Vision" where the guys visit a small seaside village and become entangled with the many wacky residents, including a crazy old lady who can foresee the future; a 92 year old ex-postman; and a guy who disguises himself as a woman. Hilarious, it was! Then, there was another (its title escapes me), where the three guys have a major argument and try their hand at solving their own separate cases. Murray mixes with a bikie gang, Cody gets sent on a wild goose chase (literally), and Nick confronts a knife-wielding woman who believes her husband is cheating on her. The end result is that on their own they're all pretty hopeless, but as a team they're successful at solving crimes. And who could forget "The Frankie Kahana Show" where the guys meet up with a terrible Hawaiian nightclub singer who's wanted by mobsters. Cody digs out a really bad song he wrote in highschool called "Sandals in The Sand" which he'd like to get published (everyone else thinks it stinks), and in the process gets kidnapped by the mobsters and thrown from the back of a speeding car into the street...Shame the show was cancelled so soon, because I actually enjoyed season 3 the most.

It's fun reading your memories of a show that was such a large part of my life. To tell the truth, I don't really remember the plots of many of the shows--they all kind of blended into each other when we were shooting. Highlights for me were working with Steve Allen (Episode Name?) and John Astin (Baxter and the Boz, I think.) Anyway, I'd enjoy seeing the show come out on DVD so my kids can watch it with me. My son was born during the final season.

Yes, some of my favorites were "Home for Christmas", "Baxter and the Boz", and the episode where Boz shoots a young man who had wounded Cody, then has to come to grip with evidence that he may have been innocent of the charges.

Dear Thom,

if this is not a fake post by a crazy fan - it´s really amazing and fantastic to read a message from you here!!! I liked "Riptide" so much I even recorded it on music cassettes in the age of perhaps 9 years! And of course as kids we played some scenes the next day or at least talked about them. Now I´m 30 years old and hopefully the DVD release will come to Germany soon, too.

What I absolutely can´t understand: why the hell didn´t come the DVD release much earlier? There are shiploads of fan sites in the net: http://www.wunschliste.de/links.pl?s=1892

There is even a whole episode written down by a fan to find: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/312962/1

It´s the same with other shows e.g. "The Fall Guy". The media companies must be stupid they don´t see the potential of their old shows. I mean - the posting of the woman about her 14 year old daughter beneath shows it clearly: the shows were just so great that even todays´ teenagers are caught by it! So what does it mean? The old shows´ audience contains both teens and adults. @ the media companies: are you blind - you don´t wanna earn money???

Best wishes from Berlin and let the good times roll!

Jens.

mail-2752, if this is really the actor who played Murray Bozinsky, it is so great to you took time to write...Riptide was one of my absolute favorite shows while I was in high school. I work in film/video now, but not in Hollywood, in Colorado...I just bought the first season on DVD last year and boy talk about bringing back great memories..In fact, I even tried to look like the guys, even buying deck shoes, shirts, etc...

one question I'd always wanted to know, since I couldn't find them, was, what brand of jeans did Cody/Nick wear on the series ????..Levi's ????

mail-2752 (Thom Bray)...thanks for posting...I just bought the first season on DVD and boy did it bring back memories...I work in film/video now as a Director of Photography, watching those episodes brought back alot of great memories from my time in high school....I was wondering about the wardrobe, what type of jeans did Perry/Joe wear on the show (???)...Levi's or custom made brand used in the show ????...I had always wondered since I tried my best to copy the shirts, deck shoes in the show....

I did want to ask you a question....What brand name jeans were worn by Cody/Nick on the show ????..were they custom or brand name ???..I loved the wardrobe and just always wanted to know...???

I work in Film/TV now, so details like that I'm used too, since I just bought the first season on DVD last year....

I loved this show. I'd schedule my night off from my after school job so I could watch it. One of my favorite episodes is "Four Eyes". I loved the way that the female detectives (one played by Stephanie Kramer pre-Hunter) and our Riptide guys played off each other. I also loved "Long Distance Daddy". I got the first season DVD and can't wait for the other 2 seasons to be released. What's really funny is that I don't think that my 14 year old daughter can wait, either. We sat and watched four episodes today and she's hooked. It just shows what wholesome entertainment Riptide was. I do find it ironic, though, that as a young teenager I had such a crush on Joe Penney and the Nick Ryder charactor, but as an adult ended up married to a guy that would be much closer to Murray.

I loved Be True To Your School too! Joe Penny did some great acting in that one! The scene where he broke down and cried in front of Cody and Murray was very touching. The chemistry between the three actors was wonderful. The viewer got the sense that these three men truly enjoyed being around each other. I was glad to hear Perry King say in an interview that he had very fond memories of working on Riptide and that he still considered Joe and Thom very good friends.

Another favorite was The Mean Green Love Machine, where Cody and Nick 'feed' horribly lame pick-up lines to Murray as he sits at a bar in Mexico trying to bait a gold digger. Hysterical! I am anxious for Seasons 2 and 3 to come out on dvd. I hope we won't have to wait too long!!

Clearly the episode from season 2 "Vile Sort of Buisness" is the best episdoe of Riptide ever.

Despite it's lack of Quinlan and sparse usage of Roboz, it is not only the series standout, but quite possibly one of the greatest things ever commited to film.

How many times can they say "sperm" and/or "horse sperm" in one episode??

Count and see.
