MSW - Shortened episodes on DVD?

My first post on the IMDB message boards - and owing to the recent announcement by the Powers That Be, likely to be my last. But since this list obviously includes many experts on all things Cabot Cove, I had to ask the burning question: Have the episodes which now appear on DVD (and in re-runs) been shortened from the originals?

I ask because I noticed that the "Technical Specs" for many of the early episodes in particular show a run-time of 60 minutes - if I've got it right, that's the run-time without ad breaks, yes? Yet many of the eps presented on DVD barely make 50 minutes.

Also: while the cuts, if cuts there are, have been carefully done, sometimes there are odd lapses - e.g. in S4E1, it's stated that a particular character is known to have a gun in their possession, yet up to the exposition at the end, this has never been shown or mentioned. OK, tight plotting wasn't the series' strong point, but this sort of thing seems clumsy to the point of unprofessional. There also often seems to be an odd lopsidedness to plots. We're given careful setup and introduced to a variety of characters - many of whom then simply disappear. In S4E4, for instance, we see a novice nun struggle to convince a persistent boyfriend that her vocation is genuine... yet after the midway mark, the issue is just dropped, together with the characters.

Is there any aficionado out there with, say, home video tapes made at the time of first broadcast who could check? I know that ordering the UK version of NEW TRICKS - which added 10 minutes per episode - greatly improved the viewing experience. Maybe MSW's also missing that extra something?

Thank you in advance!

They were about 45min on Netflix. 15min for commercials when aired on tv.

Thanks for the information. The repeat episodes now showing here (British Commonwealth country) are also only 45 minutes, and at least one MSW website gives 48min. However, the time given in IMDB technical specs usually seems to = "without commercials", which is part of why I'm wondering if the series as shown in the 1980s really did run for a full hour excluding ads.

(It was this handy little feature which alerted me to the c.10 minutes which had been cut out of NEW TRICKS episodes shown here, so as to allow for ad breaks. Getting hold of UK-published DVDs, which offer a full hour of Sandra and the boys, has definitely improved the enjoyment factor!).

MSW held a one hour time slot so it would be 45min epi with 15min comm. IMDB tech is in error.

Mmm, then the lapses in plotting and loss of interest in character development were more or less deliberate. Pity.

It was light hearted fare. Never more than that.

I don't know why the 11th season of MSW DVD does not include the "Tonight on MSW" part.

Yes, it does sound like you've got complete episodes if they are running anywhere near 50 minutes. As you may know, commercials have increased through the years, I remember when episodes were 52 minutes, decreasing in increments, down through 48, 45, 42, and now often even less than that.

Heck, even PBS doesn't run 60 minute episodes anymore so THEY can run commercials. I don't understand why networks don't understand the law of diminishing returns. When there were less commercials, people were willing to sit through them. Nowadays, few people will, and few people do. Most have various ways to fast-forward through them. Or they've fled to pay services like Netflix.

There are a couple of petitions asking IMDb not to do away with the board, one is at Change.Org. They links can be found on the NCIS Board.
