Gonzo is a weirdo. It's mentioned several times in the series.
Bunsen is an anthropomorphized honeydew melon, and Beaker is a representation of a chemist's beaker.
Scooter and Skeeter are supposedly humanoids...

Gonzo is a vulture but those type of birds are known for scavenging on the carcasses of dead animals including human flesh.
Hard to make a 'vulture' cuddly--and puppet like to children. Yeah it would have scared me if I found out what they eat when I was little.
So they very likely made him 'kid friendly' after creating the character by just telling people he was a weirdo. Yeah I can see why they did the edit in this case.
Gonzo would never ever hurt anything.

Animal is a type of monkey, and I always thought Gonzo was an anteater! Scooter & Skeeter were some species of bird, and Bunsen was a slug!
