cake making episode

By the look of it not many people come to this board but I'll post my question anyway!

In one episode Allie was making cakes. Someone started buying them and then they were making cakes like crazy. They had a song they sang while they worked. I need to know that song!! Hope someone can help.

Hello!!
Im really sorry to say i have no idea... just thought id reply to your message as there arent any others and we seem to be the only sane people here (i mean, who WOULDNT visit the kate & allie board?? its a whole lotta fun!)
but yeah id help if i could.
in fact im watching kate & allie now, this is partly why i visited this board. Either kate or allie (not sure whos who still :/) is stranded somewhere in new york city and hasnt got any money to get home. its just pure hilarity. and im learning a strong moral from this episode too... not to take anything for granted.
anyhoo... ive probably bored you to tears now... so i shall leave (swiftly).
:) that episode you mentioned sounds fun btw!! mmm... cakes.

Hi you guys, just thought I'd let you know that I used to watch this show with my mom and we both LOVED it. Every once in a while I'll see Fred Koehler (the guy who played Chip) as a small character on a tv show (think I most recently saw him on CSI: New York) and I get all euphoric for Kate and Allie. And I still think of Jane Curtin as Allie every time I see her! I would love to see this series come out onto DVD. :)

I think the song you refer to is called SHORTNIN´ BREAD. It was a hit back in the 50s - in the UK, at least.

I just saw the cake episode last week in the UK on Paramount. Yep- jlnyvoll is right on the song.

I've been recording & watching all the Kate & Allie shows with Sky+ (like TiVo or whatever in the US) for a few months now. They got to the end of them and just recently started over from the beginning again. But... I don't remember seeing a "final" episode. Allie married Bob & Kate was living with them in their apartment but then they just started showing the old shows again. Did I miss something? Did they have a "final" episode with some sort of satisfying ending?

Oh yeah- it was funny how, when they started showing the oldest ones again, you see that the actor who plays Bob Barsky at the very end (the one Allie marries) actually had a role in an early episode as a completely different character. He played a politician who kisses Allie & she falls for him until she finds out he's married. So, I just looked him up now & see he also played a different guy named Keith in yet another Kate & Allie. Guess they really liked him as a guest star. ;-)

Will you still love me when I'm in my hanging-out-with-Ravi-Shankar phase?

Wiki

Titled "Shortened Bread", E.C. Perrow published the first folk version of this song in 1915, which he collected from East Tennessee in 1912. The folk version of the song—as with James Whitcomb Riley's—does not have any distinct theme, but consists of various floating lyrics, some relating to "shortnin' bread", some not. The traditional chorus associated with the folk song goes:
Mammy's little baby loves short'nin', short'nin',
Mammy's little baby loves short'nin' bread
Shortening bread is a fried batter bread, the ingredients of which include corn meal, flour, hot water, eggs, baking powder, milk and shortening.

By now you have your answer, but I have another question for others about the cake-making episode: Didn't those cakes looks absolutely terrible? I'm no food snob, but they just looked like a mess. Oh well, I'm sure they tasted good, which is all that matters.

reply

But if I was paying for a cake I'd want it to look perfect.
